Gurley is the first Rams offensive rookie of the year since quarterback Sam Bradford in 2010, but the team has now gone back-to-back in rookie honors because defensive tackle Aaron Donald was the AP’s defensive rookie of the year last season.
Gurley, 21, had suffered a season-ending knee injury while playing at Georgia in 2014, but the Rams selected him with the 10th pick in the 2015 draft.
Rivera was presented the award Saturday night during the NFL Honors show and accepted in a video.
St. Louis running back Todd Gurley has been awarded the Offensive Rookie of the Year. In his first four National Football League games, he totaled 566 rushing yards, which is the most of any rookie in the Super Bowl era. Gurley is the fifth former SEC competitor to win the award in the last seven seasons and third in a row, joining Odell Beckham Jr., Eddie Lacy, Cam Newton and Percy Harvin as winners. “He worked extremely hard to get back to the field and put together one of the best rookie performances that we’ve seen in a long time”. Fellow QBs Tom Brady and Carson Palmer each received one vote. He beat out top overall draft selection quarterback Jameis Winston of Tampa Bay, who received 17 votes.
Newton set an National Football League mark for the position with 45 touchdowns this season: 35 passing and 10 rushing. He also ranked sixth in passer rating (99.4) while throwing for 3,837 yards. “Our coaching staff has been tremendous; our players have been outstanding”. That award goes to Rams running back Todd Gurley.
In 13 games, Gurley racked up 1,106 yards and 10 touchdowns. Raiders receiver Amari Cooper (4), Seahawks receiver Tyler Lockett (1) and Cardinals running back David Johnson (1) also received votes. The Rams flirted with Case Keenum under center as well but once the wheels got churning for Gurley, it gave the offense the ability to run first.
