U.S. District Judge Mark Goldsmith agreed with Republicans who argued that the three-day recount must end a day after the state appeals court dealt a blow to the effort.
With Wisconsin’s historic presidential recount almost three-quarters complete, Democrat Hillary Clinton has gained 82 votes on Republican president-elect Donald Trump. Trump won those states, too.
Dane County is one of 47 counties electing to hand count each of the ballots. Electors convene December 19 across the country to vote for president. Democrat Hillary Clinton and running mate Virginia U.S. Sen.
Only a small fraction of American voters trusted Green Party candidate Jill Stein to lead the country, but quite a lot trusted her to lead a complicated and expensive effort to recount the election votes. There were 560 write-ins.
President-elect Donald Trump so far has gained 57 more votes in the election recount in the region after several counties in west-central Wisconsin completed their recounts. Stein lost two votes. There was no change for Moorhead or De La Fuente.
The city of Greenfield found 412 uncounted ballots in a back office, accounting at least in part for the new vote counts. Trump won the election narrowly. Trump and Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette filed lawsuits last week to halt the recount, claiming it would pose a financial burden on taxpayers. “One of the ballot containers had a hole in it, making it susceptible to tampering and not recountable”. The original tally showed Trump leading by 22,177.
The Green Party’s best chance to overturn a statewide victory by Donald Trump has run into a swamp of dubious election protocols in MI, where Detroit officials said almost two-thirds of the precincts can not be recounted because of poor record-keeping on or after election night-presumably the rationale for a recount. Wisconsin Elections Commission spokesman Reid Magney said 34 of 72 counties have reported that they have completed their recounts. Despite that some counties in MI had already completely the hand recount of the state’s 4.8 million ballots, U.S. District Judge Mark Goldsmith concluded that there was no evidence of foul play in the state’s voting system and therefore no reason to continue with the recount.
A court hearing will be held Friday on a possible recount in Pennsylvania. The Republican Party and Trump warned that the case threatens Pennsylvania’s ability to certify its election before the December 13 federal deadline.
However, Stein had said she did not expect to change the election outcome, but wanted to test the integrity of voting systems.
US District Judge Mark Goldsmith issued the order late Wednesday – dissolving a previous temporary restraining order against the Board of Elections that allowed the recount to continue.
Stein is also seeking recounts in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Some counties hadn’t planned to start until later.
A federal judge on Wednesday revoked his order requiring a recount in MI, siding with a state appeals court that found Stein did not have grounds to mount her challenge.
