The Phoenix Suns are the team of the moment that everyone is talking about after they fired head coach Jeff Hornacek.
Phoenix is expected to interviews assistants Corey Gaines, Earl Watson and Nate Bjorkgren on Monday for the interim coach job.
The Suns announced in a release that they plan to have an interim coach in place by Tuesday.
Watson was an NBA point guard for 13 seasons and was in his first season as a Suns assistant after a year as an assistant coach of the Austin Spurs of the NBA Development League. They have lost 19 of their lost 21 games, including losses to the lowly Los Angeles Lakers and Philadelphia 76ers (2).
Hornacek was a Jazz assistant coach before being hired by the Suns. Obviously, some of the blame for the incredible amount of losing of late by the Suns can be attributed to Hornacek, but the players also deserve a good portion of the blame. Phoenix barely missed the playoffs that season, finishing ninth in the Western Conference.
The Toronto Raptors travel to the Talking Stick Resort Arena to battle the Phoenix Suns tonight. The Charlotte Hornets are in talk with the Suns regarding PF Markieff Morris and C Tyson Chandler and expect the Suns to start trading off key players to help the rebuild go a little bit faster. Starting point guard Eric Bledsoe will be out for the rest of the season due to a left knee injury. He finished runner-up to San Antonio’s Gregg Popovich for Coach of the Year that season.
The first sign of trouble came before the season began when Morris lashed out at the team for trading his twin brother, Marcus, to clear cap room for their pursuit of Aldridge.
The Suns’ painful season took another blow with a season-ending right foot fracture for small forward T.J. Warren.
And so, just two years after giving one of the five best National Basketball Association coaches ever a run for his Coach of the Year money, Hornacek is without a job.
INDIANAPOLIS – Kyrie Irving scored 25 points and LeBron James had 24 points, 12 rebounds and six assists to lead the Cleveland Cavaliers past the Indiana Pacers 111-106 in overtime. During 2011, though, the Dallas Mavericks traded him to the New York Knicks in a three-team deal.
