Restroom transgender ban bill goes to governor

February 17 03:38 2016

In a 20-15 vote, the state senate approved H.B.

Aside from being fucked up and bullshit, the bill is also attracting a lot of criticism for how much money it will likely cost the state.

Daugaard has said the measure seems like a good idea and would listen to recorded testimony before making up his mind on whether to make the bill law.

California’s School Success and Opportunity Act, signed into law in 2013, lets students participate in sex-segregated programs and activities, including sports teams, and use facilities consistent with their gender identity.

He cited constituent concerns about “co-mingling” of individuals of different birth sex, saying it was “inappropriate”. Brock Greenfield, a Republican.

“I generally haven’t met with proponents or opponents of other bills”, he said at the time. If signed by the Governor, South Dakota would be in direct conflict with the U.S. Department of Education and non-discrimination protections under Title IX of the United States Education Amendments of 1972. Conservative organizations have united around a battlecry of banning “men in women’s bathrooms” to push such policies in schools – and to block or repeal LGBT nondiscrimination laws.

The Legislature’s passage of the bill is “shocking”, said Thomas Lewis, a transgender student in his senior year at Lincoln High School in Sioux Falls, the state’s most populous city.

Transgender students will have the option of using alternate accommodations, he said, but the bill does not disclose what those accommodations would be.

“I’m sorry if you’re so twisted you don’t know who you are”, Omdahl said at a recent event when asked about the bill. Angie Buhl O’Donnell, a Democrat. “It opens the door to ridicule and public insult by our peers when really, lawmakers should be focusing on passing legislation where every student can be free to be open about who they are in an accepting environment”.

Thoughts on the developments in South Dakota?

The legislation requires that students used bath rooms and locker rooms based on their biology, not their choice.

If a student gets written consent from a parent, the student should be given a “reasonable accommodation” of a single-occupancy restroom, a unisex restroom or controlled use of a restroom or locker room, the bill states.
