2016 Rio Olympics – Tennis – Preliminary – Women’s Singles Third Round – Olympic Tennis Centre – Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – 09/08/2016.
Serena Williams reacts during her women’s singles third round match against Elina Svitolina of Ukraine at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games at the Olympic Tennis Centre on August 9, 2016 in Rio de Janeiro.
The 22 grand slam victor lost a tough third round match against Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina on Tuesday night. She and her older sister Venus, who sat in the stands Tuesday, lost in the first round of doubles – their first defeat in the Olympics after going 15-0 with three golds.
The sisters, who won the women’s doubles title in 2000, 2008 and 2012, were stunned in the first round by the Czech pairing of Lucie Safarova and Barbora Strycova.
“That will be a really good match and I look forward to it”, said Williams.
“It didn’t work out the way I wanted it to”, Williams said. “That was one of my goals”, she said.
Svitolina’s history of struggles against Williams weren’t an issue Tuesday night however, as she eliminated the top seed in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
USA Today reported that it will be the first time Serena Williams goes home from the Olympics without taking home any medal. We’ll need to hear as to whether or not she’s suffering from an injury, but one thing’s for certain-this is not how the world No. 1 envisioned her Olympic gold-medal defense.
Noteworthy names still alive in men’s singles include reigning Olympic champion Andy Murray of Great Britain, Spain’s Rafael Nadal and France’s Gael Monfils.
Pugh, just 18, came into the game as a first-half substitute for midfielder Megan Rapinoe, who played in her first match since having ACL surgery in December. “I was so happy that her parents trusted me and the professional trainers I hired for Elina”, said Sapronov. Fifteen months ago, she played an entire French Open so sick that she could hardly stand up, yet she won.
“It’s an unreal feeling for me.
As soon as her opponent goes on the defensive, Williams will blow her off the tennis court”, said Sapronov. She converted five of nine break points, including the third, seventh and final games of the second set.
The 21-year-old was born in Odessa, and was introduced to tennis at a young age by her family, according to her Women’s Tennis Association bio. What’s more, Williams beat Svitolina the past four times the pair competed against each other, as early as 2012, NBC reported.
Murray takes on Fabio Fognini for a place in the men’s quarters, while Svitolina’s reward is a last-eight clash with 11th seed Petra Kvitova. The next Grand Slam is never more than 90 days away; its hard to lose here and think about Tokyo in four years.
