In a lawsuit filed in a Los Angeles court, Ora said she had multiple records that she hoped to release, but was hamstrung by her contract with Jay Z’s Roc Nation.
At present, Ora relates that she’s now self-funding her promotional TV gigs, recording costs and video productions – making her feel “orphaned” by Roc Nation. “This is the main reason the label’s execs have been uninterested in putting effort into promoting Rita”, a source told The Sun.
‘Songs that might be submitted to her are automatically given to Rihanna, who may then hold them for months before deciding she doesn’t want them’.
The source also said the fact that Rita’s ex Calvin Harris is on Roc Nation’s books could be a contributing factor. The X Factor judge alleges she has been forced to sit on a bunch of new music that should be out by now.
“Rita’s relationship with Roc Nation is irrevocably damaged”, claims the lawsuit.
However, Rita’s plans to leave the label are also said to have been caused by her split from “Summer” DJ Calvin Harris – who is now dating Taylor Swift. Ora further states on her claim that the situation got worse when Roc Nation switched from Sony to Universal for distribution two years ago. Now there are “fewer resources available and the company suffered a revolving door of executives”.
The California Labor Code aka “the seven-year rule”, was first tested in 1944 when actress Olivia de Havilland became unhappy with Warner Bros.
Ultimately, Ora’s defense team blames Roc Nation’s growing interest in diversifying their portfolio for neglecting her and her career.
Rita Ora stirred up the music industry last week by going into a legal feud with boss Jay Z. Getty Images Jay Z played an enormous part in signing Rihanna in 2005 “Rihanna has by no means liked Rita & has-been using her power at Roc Nation accordingly”.
