He said Guzman wanted Mexican actress Kate del Castillo, who facilitated the meeting between the men, involved in the project.

As the world digests the freaky tale of Sean Penn and his mountaintop meeting with the recently recaptured drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, many are left wondering what comes next for the Hollywood actor and the woman who made it possible.

While a reporter could interview a drug cartel suspect, “they’re not journalists”, the official said.

He was interested in seeing the story of his life told on film, but would entrust its telling only to Kate”, he wrote. What happens now is crucial for Guzman, whose cartel smuggles multi-ton shipments of cocaine and marijuana as well as manufacturing and transporting methamphetamines and heroin, mostly to the US.

Penn interviewed the crime lord for Rolling Stone for seven hours, according to the article published on Saturday.

In the secret interview, Guzman, who has escaped Mexican prison twice, defended his leadership of the Sinaloa drug cartel, saying he wasn’t responsible for skyrocketing addiction rates.

Guzman, who escaped from prison a year ago, was captured Friday after a gun battle near the coast in his home state, Sinaloa. The government used the contacts between his people and those in the film industry to open a new line of investigation, according to Gomez.

Neither representatives for Penn nor Rolling Stone have responded to requests for comment from ABC News.

“The day I don’t exist, it won’t decrease in any way at all”, he said. “I am sure that authorities, however, will want to question both of them”, he said. “I have a fleet of submarines, airplanes, trucks and boats”, Guzman said.

The now notorious meeting between Penn, Del Castillo and Guzman finally took place on October 2.

“Drug trafficking does not depend on just one person”.

The case of del Castillo is a little more intriguing to Randazza. But apparently they were not enough.

The Mexican attorney general’s office said in a statement Saturday that any injunctions presented by Guzman’s lawyers won’t prevent his extradition. “We’ll let somebody else sort out what Sean Penn did and didn’t do”, he told Stephanopoulos.

“It perhaps should have come as no surprise that this homegrown icon of entertainment would catch the interest of a singular fan and fugitive from Sinaloa”, Penn wrote.

Guzman was first captured in 1993, but he escaped in 2001 with the help of prison guards.

The world’s most-wanted drug lord was recaptured in a daring raid by Mexican marines Friday, six months after he fled through a tunnel from a maximum security prison in a made-for-Hollywood escape that deeply… The world’s most-wanted drug lord… The meeting was followed by an interview, conducted via messaging and video. She tweeted a photo of herself at the naturalization ceremony, with a message to Donald Trump, letting the presidential candidate know that there was now one more American who doesn’t support him.

Extraditing Guzman would be an about-face for the government, which has in the past resisted efforts to extradite the drug lord as a matter of sovereignty.

El Chapo disappeared from Mexico’s highest security prison last summer, escaping via a mile-long tunnel that some said cost $1 million to build. Penn wrote in the article that the drug lord hired German engineers to build the tunnel. A federal official insisted that Altiplano remains a highly-secure prison and that measures were taken to improve security, with metal rods placed under cell floors.
