The 8th Congressional District in northeast Wisconsin is the only one in the state this year with an open seat and the only race expected to be competitive. Democrats were more hopeful in the Senate, where the Republican majority is a tighter 19-14. That includes 28-year-old Rebecca Zbichorski who headed to the municipal building in downtown Milwaukee to cast an early vote for Donald Trump. By Election Day, the race had narrowed to a dead heat. These contests arguably have a much more direct impact on Wisconsin residents’ lives; for example, legislators can raise or lower taxes, decide which roads to fix, choose who qualifies for welfare benefits, decide how many state dollars your local school receives, set college tuition rates and even change speed limits. Russ Feingold could help determine which party controls the U.S. Senate. Feingold, who has been in the lead for much of the campaign, is looking to reclaim the seat he lost to Johnson in the 2010 election. Clinton appeared confident, not campaigning in Wisconsin since losing the Democratic primary in April to Bernie Sanders.
Indeed the Senate races were shadowed every step of the way by the polarizing presidential race between Clinton and Trump. The numbers were even stronger in Democratic strongholds.
Berg says Republican candidate Donald Trump “acts a bit childish when it comes to trying to be a leader”.
There are other races to watch on Tuesday.
The state of IL gave its 20 electoral votes to Clinton. Johnson sent Comey a letter Monday asking for additional details about the newly discovered emails “as soon as possible”.
It came after Comey alerted Congress on October 28 that investigators had uncovered emails that may be pertinent to the dormant investigation into Clinton’s use of the private email server.
Wednesday’s Marquette poll showed the race about even. Johnson has definitely proved he’s not worthy of my vote. Republicans entered the election with a 63-36 majority in the Assembly and were in position to increase that to 64 after defeating Democratic incumbent Rep. Chris Danou.
By contrast, Feingold said, he wouldn’t put partisan loyalties first. RCP has it a toss-up, and so does Nate Silver.
Later, Johnson said: “I’ll be frank with you, I’m not particularly happy with all the false attacks, the unbelievable negativity of his campaign against me”. Russ Feingold forecast a grim night for the Democrats, who could be consigned to minority status on Capitol Hill for years to come.
With three-quarters of the votes counted, Trump was ahead of Clinton by some 4 percent.
Missouri, like North Carolina, was a GOP-friendly state that turned unexpectedly competitive as incumbent Republican Sen. “He doesn’t stand up for Wisconsin families, he doesn’t stand up for students”, Taylor said.
Johnson, whose vitriolic comments often go to extremes that even Trump avoids, will never be accused of being a heavy lifter in the Senate. Kelly Ayotte in New Hampshire after she asserted at one point that Trump could “absolutely” be a role model for the nation’s youth. They’re both looking to replace Republican Reid Ribble, who decided not to seek re-election. He’s coming to the state of Nevada where 28 percent are Hispanic.
Full results with local voting totals in both federal and local races will be printed in the November 17 edition of the Waunakee Tribune. He has faced criticism from tea party Republicans for not embracing Trump more fully. David McIntosh, president of the Club for Growth, said his group spent almost $2 million to help him and the group’s supporters raised $500,000 to support his effort. Joe Heck, a three-term congressman, has had a tough time in the polls ever since. “Absolutely”, said Cortez Masto, who if elected would be the Senate’s first Latina.
Democrats need to pick up at least four seats to reclaim the upper chamber in January if Hillary Clinton wins the presidency today, since her running mate Tim Kaine would serve as the tiebreaker.
