Samsung details new Bixby voice assistant, plans to integrate into future products

Samsung’s voice assistant will work with just 10 preloaded apps at the moment.

Microsoft just recently brought Cortana 2.0 to the iPhone and Android to challenge Google’s Assistant and Apple’s Siri – and already a new challenger is entering the ring. In our opinion, the lack of SDK at launch does affect the “completeness” feature of Bixby, as while you would know which commands will work in an app, you would not know which apps do support Bixby.

The context awareness of Bixby will kick into action once you launch it. Bixby will then quickly assess what you were doing and will let you take it further by asking contextual questions. Rhee said Samsung is trying to address the “fundamental limitation of the current human-to machine interface”. Samsung made a decision to focus on completeness, context awareness and cognitive tolerance. “Everything you can do with a touch command, you can do with a voice command when using a Bixby-enabled application”, Rhee told the Verge.

Another part of the approach to Bixby, the release said, was that the interface should be intuitive, and shouldn’t require additional training to operate if more skills are added.

Contextually aware, Bixby will be triggered by on screen commands or using the dedicated physical Bixby button that will be built into the side of future compatible devices, including the upcoming Galaxy S8.

Samsung is almost ready to unleash a new AI personality upon us. “The completeness property of Bixby will simplify user education on the capability of the agent, making the behaviours of the agent much more predictable”.

Digital assistants have become popular in past years as Silicon Valley seeks to embed AI deeper into a plethora of devices. The new interface might guarantee that the anticipated device will be very demanded. The company executive released a blog that describes what makes Bixby stand out from the rest of the artificial intelligence.

“We do have a bold vision of revolutionising the human-to-machine interface, but that vision won’t be realised overnight. Ambition takes time“, wrote Rhee. Bixby will be launched with the Samsung Galaxy S8 smartphone on 29 March. Samsung’s biggest challenge may be finding third party developers to properly integrate Bixby in other popular applications.

Bixby will eventually make its way to all of Samsung’s appliances, allowing you to control everything from air conditioners to TVs using the assistant.
