Samsung files patent for a new Wearable Smart Ring

It’s evident that the wearable device market is only going to grow and companies would want to introduce some other wearable devices aside from fitness trackers and smartwatches.

This month, Samsung has also patented a new technology that shows several modular design options such as a regular looking camera and another showing a slight bump preferably housing an optical zoom.

The patent, first spotted by Patently Mobile, shows a few key features the smart ring would offer, like the ability to control smartphones, TVs, and home automation products.

Samsung has filed a new patent application in the USPTO for an accessory called “Smart Ring”. When it comes to controlling a paired smartphone, the user will also be able to navigate through its menus and control it.

In one situation, the ring would have recognized Samsung smartphone that could display a context menu and functions of the ring, but other functions as well may be set.

Like most of the patent filings submitted by Samsung and other tech companies, the smart ring is still just an idea and might not even turn into a mass market device any time soon.

Similarly, Microsoft has openly discussed the future of smart rings, at some future stage wanting your entire technological life to be controllable from the device on your finger. The report added that Samsung sees the ring changing TV channels, turning off the lights and raising the blinds and also, some unique functionality with social media networks.

While none of these patent ideas may hit the market for years yet, is there really a need for something as potentially superfluous as a smart ring?
