San Bernardino school shooting: Student killed had survived heart surgery

April 12 10:26 2017

53-year-old Karen Smith, a teacher at the school, was shot and killed by her 53-year-old husband.

Madden said police had received reports of the shooting at the school shortly before 10:30 a.m., and officers responded within minutes. Eight-year-old student Jonathan Martinez was flown to Loma Linda University Medical Center, where he died, and a 9-year-old student, who has not been named, was critically wounded. Martinez had Williams Syndrome, a developmental disorder that affects many parts of the body, said San Bernardino Unified School District Superintendent Dale Marsden. Police said the children shot were not targeted and were likely struck by accident.

Authorities have said the suspect and another adult are dead. And just two months ago, a 39-year-old man named Christian Omar Jacinto allegedly murdered his ex-girlfriend, Sophia Darlene Vasquez Rubin, as retribution for breaking up with him. Sykes told the Los Angeles Times her daughter was a mother of four who had been a teacher for 10 years.

“All things considered, he’s in relatively good spirits”, San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said, at a Tuesday morning press conference at police headquarters in downtown San Bernardino.

Chief Burguan also said Anderson had four arrests in 20 years, but none of the cases ended in a conviction.

Balsamo reported from Los Angeles.

As he fired ten rounds from a revolver, two young students were hit. He added that police are still investigating the remainder of the gun’s history.

Anderson seemed like a man of faith with whom she could share the next chapter of her life. Someone like Anderson who was known to the staff usually would be allowed to walk to a classroom or office unescorted, Marsden said.

The shooting came 15 months after a terror attack in San Bernardino that killed 14 people and wounded 22 others at a meeting of county employees. On Facebook, Anderson posted happy images of the couple enjoying date nights and smiling in selfies.

Maass told reporters that “there was no indication the gun was visible upon his arrival at the school”. On Monday’s shooting will likely reignite the debate on gun violence in the U.S., where attempts to put in place tougher gun control measures have failed, despite a series of mass killings.

“The more training they get to respond to those type of situations, that will reduce causalities if something like that does happen”, Dawson said.

The Riverside couple had known each other four years before they were married on January 28 at Bethesda Temple Church in Los Angeles. They did not, however, provide an exact count at the time. Anderson had three adult children, all of whom have been accounted for.

Shortly after saying, “I do”, Smith became anxious about Anderson’s risky behavior. She broke up with him and he came out with a different personality.

Smith was “resistant to that”, Burguan said.

“He told her he would throw her out the window”. “She thought he was reaching out for attention”.

During a search of Anderson’s Riverside home Monday, police found a note written by Anderson indicating he felt disrespected and needed closure.

Information was revealed from temporary orders from 1997 and 2013, including claims that Cedric Charles Anderson put a pillow over a former girlfriend’s face and threatened his first wife, according to the documents.

Residents in the neighborhood held a candlelight vigil in outside of the school Monday evening. “Nor do we know exactly why he chose to do this at the school”, the chief said.
