San Diego Chargers to join Rams in LA

January 13 01:47 2017

The move is immediate, with eventual plans for the Chargers to join with the Rams in the new Los Angeles Stadium in 2018 at the new $2.6 billion stadium owned by Rams owner Stan Kronke in Inglewood. There are many levels to discuss here, starting with how it relates to the Eagles both past and in the very near future.

Long-term, it’s unclear if the National Football League can support two National Football League franchises.

If the Chargers are indeed coming to L.A., there will be several questions to address.

Dean Spanos, it appears, will move the Chargers from a city that has lived and died with them for over five decades to a city that actively does not want them.

What the move means for a team such as the Oakland Raiders-who were another option to become tenants with the Los Angeles Rams-is still to be determined.

Lastly, by way of postscript, it must be noted: Bystanders on social media have not exactly been kind to the team’s new logo, which displays a white L and A on a blue background, a la the LA Dodgers – albeit with a little lightning bolt riff. The Chargers could maybe get back $200 million of their $350 million pledge through personal seat licenses.

“The Chargers will stand next to Donald Sterling in the Hall of Shame”, said Roberts, comparing them to the infamous former owner of the Los Angeles Clippers who was banned from the National Basketball Association for making racist comments.

As far as the impact on the Eagles, well, there certainly is one. It’s a handsome stadium, just not very big (estimated capacity of 30,000 for the Chargers).

It is not an easy situation, if that’s what the Eagles decide. And so are the Philadelphia Eagles.

San Diego is a different market than those others, of course.

Last month, the franchise made preparations for the impending relocation, leasing a portion of an Orange County office facility and working to secure nearby land for practice fields. It’s setting up your meals and video and the hotel.

The fact-finding meetings mostly centered on the Raiders’ plan for a potential move to Nevada.

“But for us, it was a lot of fun”.

That leaves the 49ers with the only remaining head coaching vacancy. “I didn’t think it was going to happen”.

The Chargers have been in San Diego since 1962. The Raiders franchise would have had the option, had the Chargers made a decision to stay in San Diego.

Reactions to the news has the #Chargers hashtag getting plenty of use on Twitter, along with people tweeting about how weird it would be for the San Diego Chargers to be called the Los Angeles Chargers. The NFL is a narrow-focused world in that regard.

San Diego fans, for their part, expressed disappointment and frustration, though not surprise. Having attended that game in 2011 myself, the fans there were a great group, and it stinks for anyone to lose their football team, or their team in any other sport. “You feel the disappointment, there’s no doubt”.

The terms “San Diego Chargers” and “Los Angeles Chargers” started trending online since about 7:30 a.m Thursday morning.

The Eagles’ schedule hasn’t been released yet, but their opponents for next season have been finalized.
