San Francisco 49ers Clean House, Fire Chip Kelly After 2-14 Season

January 02 05:46 2017

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports Kelly, as well as the team’s general manager, will be let go.

Former San Francisco 49ers football team general manager Trent Baalke issued a statement today after he was sacked from the franchise, thanking CEO Jed York for the opportunity to work for the team. According to CBS Sports, Kelly called York on Saturday night when news that he would be fired began to circulate, and the two men did not have a productive conversation. But the team has had declining win totals the past three seasons, including a record 13-game losing streak this year.

This is the third year in a row team officials have fired their head coach. Before Kelly arrived in San Francisco, he won 26 games in three seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles. This is a dramatic move for sure, but one that is starting to feel like simply part of the domino effect since the 49ers inexplicably pushed Jim Harbaugh out the door two years ago. Many folks said the same thing about Harbaugh two years ago, and now any National Football League organization with an opening would clamor to have him.

Baalke confirmed the news to San Francisco radio station KNBR on Sunday, while explaining his reasons for choosing to attend the Seahawks fixture.

49ers ownership displays a quick trigger when it comes to hiring and firing head coaches. These payments don’t factor in what the 49ers coach for the 2017 season and beyond will command. Colin Kaepernick was benched in favor of Blaine Gabbert to start the season.

The San Francisco 49ers have announced that both Trent Baalke and Chip Kelly have been relieved of their duties.

The 49ers only went backwards with Kelly at the helm. Harbaugh lasted one more year, going 8-8 before moving on to coach at his alma mater, the University of MI, while Jim Tomsula went 5-11 in 2015. So, Kelly, according to these reports, is headed for unemployment again.

“It didn’t surprise me”, Baalke added.

San Francisco forced three Seahawks fumbles, but the 49ers couldn’t recover any of them, and overall, the Seattle offense didn’t turn the ball over once. “We’re all privileged to play this game and coach this game, so every time you have an opportunity to do it, go out and do it”. “With a good offseason, the right reset, I think good things are ahead for them”.
