Shoppers can save millions with tax-free weekend Aug. 5-7

This back-to-school sales tax holiday could be a good opportunity to help children in need.

It’s officially called Iowa’s Sales Tax Holiday and runs today through midnight Saturday, allowing families a chance to save some money on their back-to-school clothing and footwear needs.

When placing qualifying items in layaway or making the final payments during the tax-free weekend, your items will be tax exempt.

According to the group, “Sales tax holidays may give consumers a short break from sales taxes on certain items, but they don’t change regressive state tax systems”.

The tax holiday was created as a way to boost retail sales by giving consumers an incentive to shop.

Along with traditional fare like jeans, pants, shirts and blouses, Stage carries school uniforms, which Murphy says the store has been “selling a lot of during the past two weeks”. Last year’s back to school tax holiday lasted 10 days. The sales tax holiday, however, does not apply to sales of jewelry, cosmetics, eyewear, wallets, watches, furniture, rental of clothing or footwear, items for use in a business, or items placed on layaway or similar deferred payment and delivery plans.

The state’s sales tax holiday starts Friday and ends Sunday.

Books are also exempt from taxes as long as the book costs $30 or less.

In Bland County, students report back to the classroom on August 11, and the first day of school for kids in Tazewell and McDowell counties is August 18. The break for shoppers will total 7 percent.

Experts say you can maximize your savings by using coupons and taking advantage of buy-one-get-one free sales.

Supporters here told us in March that this would get people spending in MI. Another tax holiday was removed all together. Some things it doesn’t apply to…personal computers or computer-related accessories. Retailers are planning on becoming more competitive during the back-to-school period, so there will be a chance customers will find better bargains over the weekend than they would other times of the year.
