Melissa McCarthy reprised her role as White House press secretary Sean Spicer on the February 11 episode of Saturday Night Live – and nothing was off limits. McCarthy, as Spicer, screamed to start the press briefing.
This was perhaps not the most eye-catching instalment in the string of political sketches, but it nevertheless underlined the vital role comedy can play in holding the administration to account, at a time when political checks and balances appear under attack like never before.
The “Bridemaids” actress’ surprising turn as the president’s chief spokesman last week was not well received in the White House, with Politico reporting President Trump was upset that a woman portrayed his male press secretary, making him look weak.
“I’m going to have to use my dollies“, McCarthy’s Spicer shouts at the reporters, before explaing TSA airport policies.
McCarthy also took a shot at the real Spicer’s jocular critique earlier this week.
She then went on to condescendingly explain the “extreme vetting” measures to the crowd of journalists. First, he showed a Barbie doll, and yelled that because she was approaching immigration upon return from her “dream vacation” and was blonde, “we know she’s OK!”
That’s according to a tweet from CNN’s “Reliable Sources” host Brian Stelter, who said on Twitter staffers made a gift of “several” Super Soaker squirt guns to the White House press secretary. “We’re gonna pat her down, read her emails and if we don’t like what they say, it’s Guantanamo Bay!” The Slaughter at Fraggle Rock.
“You’re testing me, Big Guy”, he said, pointing upward referencing God. “You should have been in movies”. “In fact I’m wearing one of her bangles right now”.
