Sony ups the ante and launches OLED TV with Dolby…

Even without an OLED rival, some of LG’s 4K HDR sets dipped below $2,000 late past year.

LG’s G series OLED screen for 2017. The “W” in the name stands for wallpaper, apparently, suggesting that it’s meant to blend in with the wall. It attaches flush to the wall with magnetic brackets.

LG continues to push the boundaries of its OLED TV technology, with their new W-series 4K TVs being teased as a “Picture on Wall” experience – and well, they’re right.

Naturally Sony isn’t only selling OLED TVs in 2017; it’s also announced at CES new X930E and X940E LCD ranges. It’s lightweight, too: the 77-inch model weighs just 27 pounds, while the smaller 65-inch model clocks in at just 17 pounds – so you might not need much help to install the TVs. Thanks to the ingenious design, the entire screen resonates with rich sound emanating directly from the screen itself.

And like LG’s Nano Cell TVs announced recently, the TVs will also work with Technicolor’s expertise, meaning the already vibrant colour pushed out by the individual organic diodes will work together with a mode to make the screen portray the colours the way filmmakers intended. We didn’t have a chance to see what the W7 would look like when given SDR content in something less than immaculate 4K resolution. As with any new model, improvements such as better backlighting are touted.

LG President and Chief Technology Officer Skott Ahn said the company is working on robots for home security and baby-sitting.

“We are, as of 2016, one of the fastest growing brands in the world”.

Android TV, just like Android Wear, isn’t dead yet.

Customers, then, are mainly paying a premium for the television’s design. Up until this week, LG has been the only company capable of making OLED TV screens at a commercially viable cost.

“We are delivering on our vision of the future”.

All P-series models include Creative Pro up-scaling, an advanced remote with voice search and a headphone jack, 802.11ac wireless and Ethernet networking, and three HDMI 2.0a ports with HDCP 2.2.

Koenig forecast that $105 billion will be spent this year on televisions, down from $108 billion last year. In hindsight, perhaps Sony embracing Dolby Vision shouldn’t come as a surprise after all.
