Someone in the SUV fired toward her vehicle and Mutschlechner was struck.

University of North Texas student Sara Mutschlechner, 20, has died after an early-morning shooting on New Year’s Day.

She had been acting as a designated driver for her friends, witnesses said. The website also says it’s believed the suspects might have attended the same party as Mutschlechner and her friends, and that she grew up in Martindale.

McGuinness would go on to recall speaking with Mutschlechner’s mother, Gloria, who told her how much her daughter loved UNT and being a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority.

The third-year University of North Texas student was taken off life support on Friday evening in hospital.

Witnesses in the vehicle with Mutschlechner told police “five or six African American males” were inside the SUV, and that at least two of them were at the same New Years Eve party they had come from.

A vigil is set for 8 p.m. Saturday for Sara Mutschlechner, the 20-year-old student shot while driving after a party.

She is now on life support and is not expected to survive. ‘Each and every one of our lives at the Gamma Phi Chapter of ZTA has been touched by the spunky, selfless attitude of our beloved sister, Sara, ‘ said chapter president Jordan Roberts.

The exchange was “peaceful at first”, but the suspects then “made some comments towards the girls, and it escalated from there”, Denton police officer Shane Kizer said.

Police are now trying to locate the SUV, described only as a dark-colored – possibly black – Lexus or Toyota model.

Around 60 people were at the house party.
