‘Spotlight’s’ best-picture Oscar shows that big, noisy movies don’t always win

The film is nominated for 10 Oscars, including best picture and best director, and it is already off to a roaring start.

The Indiewire blogger called the 41-year-old DiCaprio a “beloved movie star at a time when there aren’t many“, pointing to the punishing film shoot he endured in freezing weather conditions to portray 19th century fur trapper Hugh Glass.

Imagine for a second that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences never changed its policy on how many films could be nominated for Best Picture.

The night’s only major surprise came when Mark Rylance (“Bridge of Spies“) beat out favorite Sylvester Stallone (“Creed“) and Mark Ruffalo (“Spotlight“) for Best Supporting Actor. And the big victor of the night was Mad Max: Fury Road, a feminist futuristic action film the dealt powerfully with women held as sex slaves. In the race for Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing it was Mad Max: “Fury Road” that continued its reign of terror! In this case, it was even more unlikely because it was the first Best Picture victor with only two combined Oscars in over 60 years.

Mel Gibson first portrayed the traumatized hero wandering a post-apocalyptic Australian wasteland in 1979 and reprised the role two more times (finally facing off against Tina Turner in 1985’s Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome).

“Fury Road” has won the Oscars for best costume design, makeup, editing, production design and sound editing.

Sixel has also worked on feature films such as Babe: Pig in the City in 1998 and Happy Feet in 2006. The Big Short won for best adapted screenplay.

Still, it was Smith who won the Oscar, along with writer Jimmy Napes, for “Writing’s on the Wall” from “Spectre“.
