Le’Veon Bell must have been jealous when two drives into the drubbing the Steelers put on Miami in Sunday’s 30-12 Wild Card win, Ben Roethlisberger was 7-for-7 for 162 yards, Antonio Brown had three catches for 119 yards and the other two Bs had combined for two touchdowns. Running back Jay Ajayi, who rushed for 204 yards against the Steelers in October when the Dolphins won, 30-15, was held to 33 yards on 16 carries. The Steelers made the playoffs in 2014 and 2015 but had to play without Bell, who had season-ending knee injuries both seasons.
“You had a great year, a lot to be proud of”, Tannehill said.
But Sunday wasn’t the time for Ajayi to reflect on the season. Somehow, though, it was only for one play.
“From a personal standpoint, over time I’m sure I’ll be able to feel good about what happened”. That ended with the coup de grace, an 8-yard run by Bell behind the blocks of David DeCastro and David Johnson. The Dolphins missed their best opportunities to get back in the game late in the second quarter and early in the third when they suffered three consecutive turnovers (two fumbles and an interception).
The Steelers play the Chiefs next week, and, if they win there, they’ll probably play the Patriots after that.
The first floored Moore, taking him out of the game for one snap as he got checked for concussion, while the second saw him stripped of the football just before half-time when it looked like the Dolphins were set to score. If he can lineup in the backfield, the Steelers could line Bell up on the outside as a receiver and the offense is far more dynamic in that formation. Cool. Alright we’re going to find a way to win.
“Don’t know anything yet, but we’ll find out soon, hopefully”, said Roethlisberger, who acknowledged being anxious after hurting it late in the game but added, “I’ll be out there next week”.
“We wanted to go out and make a statement”, Bell proclaimed. The Steelers will stack the box and make former Panther QB Matt Moore beat them with his arm.
The Dolphins took the second-half kickoff and again moved into Steelers territory, but Moore collided with Ajayi. That’s really cold and it favors the Steelers, as the Dolphins are a soft southern team that prefers the heat and does not have Larry Csonka anymore to power them through frigid conditions.
But the biggest concern is stopping the Steelers’ Pro Bowl running back Bell, whose NFL-leading 157 yards per game from scrimmage were the third-most in league history.
Ajayi’s frustrations also extended beyond the lack of yardage. The next two catches went for touchdowns of 50 yards and 62 yards respectively. “Nothing surprises me. He’s been doing it a long time for us”. I’ll take the frozen home field advantage and go with Ed on this one.
The fact Moore was around to see it seemed improbable when the 6-foot-4, 265-pound Dupree launched into him just as Moore released a pass intended for Jarvis Landry with about seven minutes left in the first half. “I just needed a second there”.
