Stella McCartney and Chelsea Handler Team Up For Breast Cancer Awareness

The five-year survival rate for breast cancer is 98% among those whose cancer has not spread beyond the breast at the time of diagnosis.

Michelle Wilkes, a registered nurse and breast health specialist who works with breast cancer patients at the Navy hospital, sees between four and six newly diagnosed patients each month.

Women in their 60s get the most benefit from mammograms, according to the American Cancer Society.

Going through cancer together, brought them closer.

Both women ended up getting referred to McKay-Dee Dermatology and Plastic Surgery and learned they didn’t have to be flat-chested the rest of their lives.

In the African American community, there are several diseases that are most common.

The now 51-year-old said back when she was she first diagnosed at 35, breast cancer was not as prevalent, but it ran in her family. Today alone, around forty women will be diagnosed with the disease. Screening mammograms help find breast cancer before any symptoms appear, oftentimes before a woman can feel it. “We got to talking, and I cried, and we’ve been friends since”.

Throughout October, Wilkes promotes breast cancer awareness through special events including runs, educational visits and encouraging coworkers to wear pink.

In the earlier period, one-third of cancers found were small.

“I was so confused, and my life was turned upside down”, she said.

Last year, 62 women received clinical breast exams at the AIS Cancer Center’s free breast exam event. It’s a staggering statistic that unfortunately is bound to affect somebody you know. You may also choose to get them more often.
