Steve Harvey apologises for Miss Universe gaffe

January 03 16:01 2016

Miss Universe host Steve Harvey may have been set up to fail by a poorly designed cue card when he incorrectly announced Miss Colombia had won over Miss Philippines.

The live telecast of the pageant ended without any credits and didn’t show Miss Philippines taking her first walk as the victor of Miss Universe 2015.

The 21-year-old responded after accidentally being crowned Miss Universe due to Steve Harvey announcing the wrong victor.

Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez, thought she had won but a chagrined Harvey held up the card with official results showing that Gutierrez was first runner-up.

The unexpected turn of event has made an impact through social media because of the wrong information made by Steve Harvey. The actual victor was Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach. To give it to her for a couple of minutes, and then to take it away. “I feel awful… Secondly, I’d like to apologize to the viewers at that I disappointed as well. But as Miss Columbia was very conservative and also respectful, I would have done as she did”, Miss Santa Barbara County Arianna Lemus said.

And soon after, he had to “correct his congratulations”, later posting, “Adriana Gutierrez, you are still our Miss Universe!“.

When Cruz asked Riek how she would have handled the situation had she been in Gutierrez’s place, she said that it would be the “most terrible situation ever”. Again it was an honest mistake. Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach was named Miss Universe.

Speaking to cameras in an interview posted on the Miss Universe Facebook page, she said she believes “everything happens for a reason”, “I’m so happy, thank you for voting for me”.

A day after India’s Urvashi Rautela failed to win the Miss Universe 2015 pageant, the Uttarakhand native on Tuesday claimed that the competition was biased.
