Mark Davis, Jon Gruden and Reggie McKenzie are all smiles.
The Raiders almost got there in Gruden’s first stint from 1998-2001, but the team lost to Baltimore in the 2000 AFC title game and followed that with the memorable loss in the snow against the Patriots that still haunts the franchise. Now that the tuck rule has been repealed, perhaps Gruden will get another shot at the Patriots in the upcoming years.
Mark Davis had finally reeled in his big fish – “Jon Gruden is Mark Davis’s white whale”, said Howie Long – and the Raiders did everything possible to make Gruden’s (second) Alameda introduction a grand spectacle. What if Carr can’t take it after a couple of years and wants to leave?
“Brady fumbled that ball.” said Gruden to his former player Charles Woodson.
On an overhead projector in the team’s weightlifting facility, the Raiders showed footage of their past – 34-year-old Gruden.
Of all the mistakes that Al Davis committed, trading Jon Gruden was the worst of them.
There has been a video shared around the internet in recent days of when Carr met Gruden during the coach’s television “QB Camp” before the 2014 draft. Now, it’s unfinished business for the former ESPN Analyst. So like any good, maniacal football head coach, he should use every advantage he has to try to pull off what many are already deeming to be the impossible. “I really haven’t. I’m not a real deep philosophical person”. He’s healthy now. He’s I think been in a lot of different systems – he’s played for a number of different [coaches] or has not [had] a lot of continuity around him that way.
“I’ll be interested to see, will he run the same offense that he was running when I got a chance to work with him in Tampa?” I’m at a point in my life where I need another challenge.
Gruden gave the pitch strong consideration in November, and things started moving fast just before Christmas.
The only way the buzz will last all the way to Vegas will be if the Raiders under Gruden can win football games and not just press conferences. “I think he’s proven that and it’s up to us as a coaching staff to improve around him. You’re going to sign for $100 million dollars, to me, in the next four years a Super Bowl championship is something that I should be able to expect from you”. He’s just that type of coach, very inspirational. I’m going to do everything I can.
If you believe that he is the guy that can turnaround the franchise, then you do whatever you can to bring him in. And it was only a matter of minutes before Gruden brought up that snowy day in Foxboro. The excitement in today’s press conference was felt among all who attended.
Davis said he spoke with Gruden on Christmas Eve in Philadelphia, the night before the Raiders played at the Eagles.
“Somebody asked me what was harder, getting the 31 votes to move to Las Vegas, or getting Jon Gruden?“.
