Suspicious package prompts evacuations at Atlanta airport

March 23 21:00 2016

The Atlanta Police Department evacuated the public areas of the domestic terminal out of an “abundance of caution”, according to a tweet from the Atlanta airport. It later said the matter had been dealt with and that people were being allowed to the terminal areas.

The incident came one day after an attack at Brussels Airport left at least 11 people dead and scores injured.

Airport officials and police could not immediately be reached by phone. The site was quickly cleared and airport operations resumed.

APD says the suspicious package was just a bag of medication and posed no threat to passengers. Husband and wife Justin and Stephanie Shults, originally from Tennessee and Kentucky, respectively, but now living in Belgium, have not been heard from since they dropped a relative at the airport shortly before the blasts, a family member said. The Islamic State claimed responsibility. “We’ve significantly increased security at the airport”, said Reed.

Denver had a scare Tuesday similar to Atlanta’s false alarm.

US officials on Wednesday sought to confirm the whereabouts of Americans missing in Brussels following Tuesday’s suicide bombings and Atlanta’s airport was briefly evacuated because of a suspicious package as travelers remained on edge.

Atlanta airport officials said in a statement that they are continuing to investigate the incident and will provide more details when available.
