Through the first nine months of 2015, Tesla sold 3,025 Model S vehicles in China, well below its expectations of 10,000 units.
While an electric pickup sounds cool, Tesla is now focusing on the Model 3, which is expected to have a starting price of $34,000 and will compete against General Motors’ all-electric Chevrolet Bolt, according to Ubergizmo.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk talked about the possibility of his company building a pickup truck powered by electricity in a recent interview at the StartmeupHK Festival in Hong Kong, Ubergizmo reported.
Would a Model 3 crossover look like a mini Model X?
The design will be unveiled in March, but we now have greater indications that the Model 3 will actually be a platform for two vehicles – a small sedan and a compact SUV – and possibly more. Seeking Alpha contributor Bill Lobner did a detailed analysis of operating costs and found that the Model 3 would do well even if gas prices drop below $1/gallon. The two different vehicles are built on the same platform, which means Tesla could be structuring the Model 3 as a breakout lineup rather than a one-off. There’s also a chance that it could have Falcon Wing doors like the Model X.
Tesla chose to demonstrate how all of these new features can be combined to “revolutionize” a driver’s commute in a short YouTube video.
Musk previously said Tesla will continue to develop this technology, until cars can more or less drive themselves point to point. “Again, it will have a premium price over the Model 3 similar to the $5,000 difference between the Model X and Model S”.
What we didn’t know was that this mystery Tesla model would be ready in time for the Model 3 event, which Musk has been planning for a long time now.
It’s not known when, or if, approval will be given and when Summon will be available for Australian Tesla Model S owners to use.
