Schumer is expected to meet with Trump shortly.
The federal government will enter a partial shutdown at midnight if no funding bill passes the Senate. The Senate adjourned for the day just after 10pm Thursday and will return at 11am Friday, giving them little time to find a solution to keep the government open.
“This vote should be a no brainer”, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said on the Senate floor Friday morning.
“Republicans control the House, they control the Senate and they control the presidency”, said Senator Patrick J. Leahy, Democrat of Vermont.
A spokeswoman for Stabenow said the senator is “focused on working with Republicans and Democrats to reach a long-term solution on government funding and believes that kicking the can down the road is hurting MI and is no way to do business”.
For the GOP, it’s déjà vu, since independent voters overwhelmingly blamed Republicans for government shutdowns in 1996 and 2013. He said the previous administration “weaponized” the government shutdown in budget negotiations and did not encourage agencies to lessen the impact with unobligated funds.
Sources say the pressure is directed at members who might support a bill proposed by Sens.
Twenty-one percent of Americans polled said they would blame Trump for a shutdown, while 26 percent said they would lay blame on his Republican counterparts in Congress.
Congress is now only hours away before the government could shut down.

Arguing that Trump’s predecessors “weaponized” that shutdown, Mulvaney said Friday the budget office would direct agencies to work to mitigate the impact of a potential lapse in funding.
A test vote on a filibuster by Senate Democrats appeared likely before the shutdown deadline of Friday at midnight. If the Senate moves a different spending bill than the one passed in the House, it will be sent back to the House for a vote. “We all know that”, the New York Democrat said. It would also allow Trump to resume his weekend plans to return to his Florida resort.
“I want to keep the government open”, West Virginia Democratic Sen.
In the Senate, Democrats have pledged to oppose the bill unless it includes protections for recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.
Trump was originally scheduled to attend a “Trump Victory Dinner” Saturday night at Mar-a-Lago, with proceeds going to a joint fundraising committee for his re-election campaign and the Republican National Committee.
Democrats are demanding help for “Dreamers”, more than 700,000 immigrants who entered the USA illegally as children. The Republicans and the Democrats are divided over the Democratic Party’s demand to protect more than 7,00,000 undocumented immigrants from deportation.
Schumer said if agreement is not reached by Friday night, Democrats would support a shorter-term funding measure that would “give the president a few days to come to the table”.
Mr McConnell added that Democrats instead were aiming to “hold the entire country hostage” by demanding that a “non-imminent problem” related to immigration be resolved immediately.
