This film is soon to be a classic. I remember my dad took me to see A New Hope in 1997 when the Special Editions were released. Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen) gets taken by the galactic emperor so he can design the Death Star. In the past, “Star Wars” films seemed to disregard emotional aspects of war, but “Rogue One” makes up for that with Erso’s family history bringing a new dynamic.
Before Rogue One was in theaters, Disney held a huge press junket for the film in San Francisco. In addition, the movie plays while the orchestra plays the score for recording. If a rock is heading to you, you see the rock coming and you have to avoid it and the ship moves and it vibrates and you push the buttons and things turn on and off. It will have you sitting on the edge of your seat the whole time.
Whitaker’s character, Saw Gerrera, who raises Jyn, isn’t all that good. With hidden motives, the Rebel Alliance recruit Jyn in an effort to stop her father from building the ultimate weapon of mass destruction. The trio recruits a former imperial pilot, Bodhi (Riz Ahmed), along with force-strong monk Chirrut (Donnie Yen), and his big gun-wielding companion Baze (Wen Jiang). Along with Williams’ score, it is a trademark of the series. Despite the predictability, “Rogue One” keep things tense and suspenseful throughout. Something so engrained into the psyche of modern life that lines like “May the Force be with you” are familiar to people who have never set eyes on a “Star Wars” film. There is also a CGI scene with a young Princess Leia, but that image was a little disturbing. Director Gareth Edwards made the choice to leave it out even though those floating letters of the original Star Wars essentially led to Rogue One almost 40 years later.
The film stars Felicity Jones and is a stand-alone story, separate from the main Star Wars saga.
“There is much to this movie that feels very familiar, yet vastly different”.
But this is also a film that tells its own story and introduces us to some new characters. Rogue One partially succeeded on the notion that the central characters were more “everypeople”, which gave it a distinct feel from the other films, and giving Lyra Jedi status might have made the movie feel more redundant. “You can’t watch it without getting carried away”.
Despite it focusing on events that we’re already familiar with, Rogue One does an excellent job at opening the canon to new characters, places and technology while integrating them with the old familiars. With a 9.5/10 rating, it definitely has my seal of approval.
