Early Monday morning, the National Football League confirmed Tom Brady’s stolen jersey from Super Bowl 51 was discovered. VIDEO: Brady discusses missing jersey after Super Bowl win Something similar happened to Brady’s jersey after the Patriots’ 28-24 victory over the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX on February 1, 2015.
Shortly after Brady and his Patriots beat the Falcons 34-28 in Super Bowl LI, the New England quarterback noticed his No. 12 game jersey had gone missing. Somehow, in between taking it off and zipping up his bag, with the dressing room full of players, family, media, security, and – most importantly – cameras, Brady’s game jumper went missing.
Incredibly, this isn’t even the first time it’s happened to Brady. “It was right here”, he was overheard saying. “I know exactly where I put it”, Brady said, according to USA Today Sports.
Brady asked the media and public to notify him if anyone tried to sell it on the Internet.
Brady has estimated that the jersey is worth $500,000, as NPR has reported.
Mauricio Ortega was the director of La Prensa before he was sacked after authorities contacted the publication, according to multiple reports out of Mexico. FS1 aired a video on The Herd with Colin Cowherd on Monday afternoon that appears to show Ortega walking out of the Patriots’ locker room after this year’s Super Bowl with something tucked under his arm.
Ortego’s newspaper is owned by a large Mexican media company, OEM.
Ortega resigned last Tuesday, citing personal reasons.
The jersey has finally been recovered, and though the reports about what happened are still developing, it certainly appears that the actual story of how the jersey disappeared actually does involve an global ring of sports memorabilia thieves.
The NFL also announced another jersey worn by Brady in Super Bowl XLIX in 2015 was retrieved after an investigation led by the FBI found both in possession of an worldwide media member.
A Mexican federal government official, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the case, said the attorney general’s office participated in the investigation and obtained a search warrant.
