The directors of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and National Security Agency will break their public silence on Monday about their investigations into possible links between Russian Federation and President Donald Trump’s campaign at a rare open congressional intelligence committee hearing.
Asked “Was Donald Trump under investigation during the campaign?”
“The one crime we know that’s been committed is that one: the leaking of someone’s name”, said Mr Nunes.
FBI Director James Comey found a way to do just that while testifying before the House Intelligence Committee on Monday.
That directly undercut Trump’s longstanding claims that any talk of Russian involvement in the election was a story ginned up by Democrats for political gain or to excuse Hillary Clinton’s loss in 2016.
“The stakes are nothing lesss than the future of liberal democracy, ” Schiff said.
Comey said the Department of Justice as a whole also had no evidence that Trump Tower had been wiretapped.
Schiff also sought to make clear that, even if he had wanted to, Obama could not have had bugs planted in Trump’s offices. The Department of Justice has asked me to share with you that the answer is the same for the DOJ and all its components.
“DNI Clapper “right” to say no evidence of collusion between Russian Federation and Trump Campaign”, Mr Trump said on Twitter, using the official presidential account rather than his personal one.
President Trump on Monday questioned the Clinton campaign’s alleged Russian Federation ties less than an hour before House Intelligence Committee holds its first public hearing on the Kremlin’s involvement in the 2016 election.
But the hearing did provide a moment or two of levity, including during amid questioning from Conaway, a Midland Republican.
Comey’s testimony echoes what legislators from both sides of the aisle said last week. He also went on reject the president’s claims that the Obama administration “wiretapped” Trump Tower previous year, saying, “Let me be clear: we know there was not a wiretap on Trump Tower”.
Nunes said Monday’s hearing would also look into the possibly illegal leaking of national security information since Trump’s election in November. Several Trump allies – including Paul Manafort, Michael Flynn and Carter Page – were connected to Russian Federation during Monday’s House hearings.
Trump is keeping tabs on the congressional hearing, tweeting that the Federal Bureau of Investigation and National Security Agency are telling Congress Russia did not influence the electoral process.
And it’s still possible that House Republicans pass their Obamacare repeal/replace legislation, giving Trump a boost to his agenda. “However, it is still possible other surveillance tactics were used to monitor Trump and his associates”.
A number of Republicans have expressed skepticism about Trump’s tweets on Obama.
The White House, including Trump himself, has repeatedly denied any collusion between the campaign and the Kremlin. “I’m sorry. I haven’t been following anyone on Twitter while I’ve been sitting here”, he said.
