In her role as a New York Senator, Clinton introduced a bill to extend family leave for the families of armed service members, and several (yes, more than two) involving child care funding and adoption assistance, and another to eliminate the Single Parent Tax Act (advocating for children and families are kind of Clinton’s thing).
And yet, the nation is probably better off with Trump offering a flawed, half-baked plan, rather than no plan, because it suggests a bipartisan consensus that maternity leave and child care are critical national issues that the federal government can do much more to address. As I read through his plan it mostly deals with tax deductions and credits which is where I think this discussion primarily belongs in terms of policy. Why should the largest and most profitable US corporations get a massive tax break they don’t need or deserve?
Donald Trump knows he could stand to lose a few pounds but otherwise is in great health, campaign adviser Sarah Huckabee Sanders told MSNBC on Wednesday after the Republican presidential candidate filmed a TV segment about his well-being.
First, the plan focuses exclusively on maternity leave, leaving dads and partners of all kinds completely out of the conversation. “We take an individualized approach to helping employees manage family and work responsibilities”.
Here’s a look at the differences.
But Trump’s paid leave proposal is only for new mothers.
Clinton’s campaign says she is rejoining the campaign trail Thursday after being diagnosed with pneumonia last week. This hurts both men and women. Trump referred to the campaign website. He seems to have left out a significant portion of the population who want and deserve parental leave. And the public knows this: A nonpartisan poll from Brigham Young University and the Deseret News in Salt Lake City showed that Americans think employers should be required to offer at least four months of paid leave to new parents – moms and dads.
It’s actually Trump who’s the newcomer to policy specifics. She also paired it with a proposal to increase pay for childcare providers and early childhood educators as a way to ensure quality and availability. HillaryClinton.com is virtually buried in policy proposals for child care, family leave, and elder care (including a special section on Alzheimer’s disease). Hillary Clinton has been talking about the cost of child care since May, when she was still running in the primary against Bernie Sanders.
Others said states or businesses should be the ones to decide whether employees should receive paid family leave. “Conservative Republicans, in particular, have long seen a mandated expansion of the social safety net as anathema to their attempts to shrink government spending and give companies more control over their leave policies”. The GOP nominee’s slapdash proposal isn’t meant to solve social and economic problems but political ones. Do the Trumps really believe American families can only thrive with women at the helm, or that fathers shouldn’t have the opportunity to support their families, beyond a paycheck?
