United States President Donald Trump on Tuesday made his first presidential visit to California.
Trump’s decision to sue California over its sanctuary laws, according to Gov. Jerry Brown in 2017.
A U.S. Border Patrol agent who attended President Donald Trump’s review of wall prototypes said the president’s presence alone was highly valued among him and his fellow agents.
Mr. Trump admired versions that were hard to climb over, and ones that allowed visibility through to Mexico, saying they gave agents on the USA side better awareness of threats. The place is totally out of control.
“They just keep adding more, making it taller”, he said from his rooftop.
The hostility to Trump’s brief visit to California was hardly surprising, since he lost the state to Hillary Clinton by a crushing 30 percentage points, and the 4 million ballot difference in their finish accounted for the president’s failure to carry the popular vote.
Brown responded on Twitter, thanking Trump for the “shout-out”.
Trump announced no new action or policy while here, but the events provided good visuals to amplify his message of stronger border security and support for the military – he gave a speech at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar before heading to the fundraiser in Beverly Hills.
Trump also called for finding a prototype that can be seen through, saying that it is crucial to fighting cartels. The funds will benefit the president’s 2020 reelection campaign and the Republican National Committee. The 30-foot-tall barriers use varying configurations of steel, concrete and even spikes to create ramparts far more formidable than nearly anything in place along the 2,000-mile border with Mexico.
Trump has insisted that Mexico will pay for it. Mexico’s government has strongly rejected that plan.
Trump also used the occasion to reiterate a line from his campaign, saying, “For the people that say no wall, if you didn’t have walls over here, you wouldn’t even have a country”.
“I have a great relationship with the president of Mexico, a great guy”, Trump said, adding that “we’re trying to work things out”.
William Stanhope, of Chula Vista, was one of the first protesters against Trump to arrive in the area, and was on the same side of the street as sympathizers of the president.
He echoed those themes in remarks near the border and at the Marine base here.
Many fear that California will become the next Little Rock and that the federal government may do everything within its scope to execute the immigration laws despite opposition by state officials in California.
Last week, Trump’s Justice Department filed a lawsuit accusing California of violating the U.S. Constitution and putting federal agents in danger by approving laws protecting illegal immigrants.
Hundreds of protesters gathered outside the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown Hotel ready to oppose his visit. “In one year we did more damage to ISIS than other administrations, a certain other administration, did in many years”, he said.
Trump no doubt benefited by the image of consulting with law enforcement officials of a like mind.
Trump’s visit was greeted with peaceful protests by demonstrators both for and against his planned wall. Around her, people were chanting “USA!” and waving flags and posters.
Trump called on Congress to approve funding for the wall while at the same time halting federal grants to cities with sanctuary policies. Donnelly’s suggestion on Schaaf was met with shouts of “Lock her up!”
Protests are also being planned across the border in Tijuana, Mexico, when Trump will examine the 30-foot-tall prototypes built along the global border to fulfill his signature campaign promise. “Go away Cheeto man”, one sign read.
