Trump now praises Electoral College

She now has about 1 million more popular votes than Trump.

Political author Tara Ross, who has specialized in studying the electoral college, says without the electoral college, candidates like Clinton could win an election by simply focusing on a couple of states. Indeed, a presidential race decided that way would probably mean candidates devoting nearly all their energies to Texas, New York, California and Florida (the Sunshine State gets plenty of attention which ever system you apply) and those states with smaller populations would indeed by largely ignored. The last Republican to win the popular vote was George W. Bush in 2004. But not in the U.S. Here, we use an Electoral College.

“If you take all the states that are usually gonna be Democratic, and all the states that are usually gonna be Republican, the Democrat only needs to pick up 29 electoral votes to be president”, McWhirter said.

Like it or not, Trump will be the next president of the United States.

If you think this inconsistency can be explained by the four-year gap between the set of tweets (as well as the obvious fact that Trump’s victory in 2016 can be exclusively attributed to the Electoral College), guess again.

The states that have so far enacted the law all lean Democratic, but Michelle Whittaker of the non-profit FairVote was hopeful Trump’s “60 Minutes” interview on Sunday would bring Republican states on board.

“I’m not going to change my mind just because I won”, he said. You don’t have to like that he didn’t win the popular vote. In 48 of the 50 states, the victor of that state’s popular vote gets all of the state’s electoral votes.

Donald Trump’s victory marks the second time in recent us history that a president did not capture both the popular vote and the Electoral College majority. If the protests occurred before the election (and there were some), I’d think the protesters were expressing their views that people should not vote for Trump or support his policies. Many others are saying that it would be undemocratic and unconstitutional for the Electoral College to choose the person for whom the most citizens voted. “And so just over one out of every two Americans voted, period”. Back when he did so in 2012, though, he had a much less favorable position on the institution.

I am only 19 years old, and this was the first time in my life that I voted in an election. One is that third-party candidates could prevent the leading vote-getter from gaining a majority. If Trump does not receive a majority of elector votes on December 19, 2016, then the fate of the presidency will be in the hands of the House of Representatives. And, remember, that was in a case in which the president had won both the popular and the electoral vote.

The resulting furor over this election outcome has prompted Senator Barbara Boxer to announce a new bill to abolish the Electoral College.
