Trump Offers to Continue Funding Planned Parenthood if They Stop Abortions

Rep. Cathy Abercrombie, a Democrat from Meriden who is House chair of the appropriations subcommittee on human services, said she believed there would be support among legislators to include the funding for Planned Parenthood in the $20 billion state budget. Still, Republicans have been pushing to block funding to Planned Parenthood, because they also happen to offer abortions.

As the New York Times goes on to point out, Trump’s attempt to reach out to Planned Parenthood was a relatively surprising move that seems to suggest an “internal struggle” between catering to the Republican party and to his daughter Ivanka Trump, who has been vocal about her hopes to champion women’s rights in her father’s administration.

CNN also reports, “Conservatives have complained that the women’s health services organization does support research they oppose”, a statement that appears to paint the recent allegations of Planned Parenthood’s sale of aborted baby body parts for profit as mere opposition to “research”.

“We need health care, we need affordable health care and we need comprehensive health care”, said Fleming.

Representatives from Planned Parenthood in ME said the new bill would be a “healthcare disaster”. Ninety-four percent of its pregnancy services are abortion. Seventy-five percent of Planned Parenthood’s patients have incomes at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty level – just $12,060 for an individual – and more than half of Planned Parenthood’s 650 health centers are located in rural or medically underserved areas.
