“This birther issue which we heard from Donald Trump and others, a racist effort to try to delegitimize the president of the United States”, Bernie Sanders says. That day is called “Super Tuesday“.
“Bottom line is I don’t think this country supports – and I do not – military-style tactics”, Rubio said early Wednesday.
Although the caucus in Nevada is not expected to have a significant impact on the overall race – only 30 delegates or slightly more than one percent of the total are up for grabs – it was the first contest for the Republicans in the US West.
Trump’s victory speech contained his signature boasting and off-the-cuff commentary.
The race for the nomination in both major political parties has produced candidates who reflect a deepening anger among American voters with the nation’s political establishment and the gridlock for much of the Obama administration. John Kasich has five delegates and Ben Carson has three.
Rubio and Cruz are battling to emerge as the clear alternative to Trump.
“All of a sudden he’s getting very tough and he is because he’s getting very nervous”, Trump added, suggesting that Cruz has now slipped to third place behind Rubio, as he did in the results of the SC primary. Jeb Bush, the former Florida governor, appeared to open a wider path in the race for Mr. Rubio when he ended his campaign on Saturday after a disappointing finish in the SC primary.
Mr. Cruz and Mr. Rubio have attacked each other angrily in recent days, as each has struggled to establish himself as Mr. Trump’s strongest rival.
Later on Wednesday, Mr Trump won his first endorsements from sitting members of Congress, with Duncan Hunter of California and Chris Collins of NY announcing they are backing him for the Republican presidential nomination. “Now we are winning winning, winning the country“, Trump said, claiming victory to a crowded hall.
Donald Trump’s win in Nevada caucuses was all but certain. Repeating again that he was the only candidate so far to best Trump – in Iowa – Cruz declared that Super Tuesday, now less than one week away, “Will be the most important night of this campaign”.
“We intend to keep going, Megyn, we’re not stopping and I’m not giving up”, Kasich reiterated.
The victory gives Trump huge momentum going into next week’s Super Tuesday.
Nevada’s caucusing played out in schools, community centres and places of worship across the state – a process that’s been chaotic in the past. Among voters 65 and over, who made up a third of Nevada Republican caucus-goers, Trump more than doubled Rubio’s support, winning 51 percent to 25 percent.
Donald Trump’s supporters helped to almost double the numbers. Rubio also is eyeing more moderate states like Minnesota and MI, where his campaign believes a win is possible.
