Trump says donation to AG not connected to university

For instance, there was only one mention of this story on any of the five Sunday shows, when John Dickerson asked Chris Christie about it on ” Face the Nation” (Christie took great umbrage: “I can’t believe, John, that anyone would insult Pam Bondi that way”).

As far as rhetoric goes, it’s a tricky line to walk.

When asked what he was hoping to get from the donation, Trump did not answer directly.

Noting that the contribution was made in 2013, the Post reported that at the time Bondi “was considering whether to investigate fraud allegations against Trump University”. The story re-emerged last week when the Washington Post’s David Fahrenthold reported that Trump paid a penalty to the IRS after his foundation made an illegal contribution to Bondi’s PAC.

Where Trump gets into trouble is the why.

On Aug. 25, 2013, the office of New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced a civil lawsuit seeking $40 million in restitution for customers allegedly ripped off by Trump University.

“Many of the attorneys general turned that case down because I’ll win that case in court”, said Trump, according to CBS. And one of the things they ought to be curious about comes to us out of Florida, where the politically weird is nearly commonplace.

So why write a $25,000 check in a state A.G. race?

Hillary Clinton on Tuesday accused Donald Trump of obfuscating on an improper political donation he made to the reelection campaign of Florida’s attorney general, calling on him to detail his conversations with the official while questioning his character. “Donald Trump has admitted that he knows how the system works and that he has worked with both Democrats and Republicans and that money has been exchanged. I never spoke to her about that”. Bondi is a “fine person, beyond reproach”. “I have a lot of respect for her”. “I just have a lot of respect for her as a person”.

According to Trump, he never spoke to Bondi.

She also hit the Republican nominee for the controversy surrounding Trump University.

The problem here is obvious.

“It had to be political in my mind because Donald Trump was treated differently than any other similarly situated scam artist in the 16 years I was at the consumer protection office”, said Owens, who lives in Houston.

Political observers are well-familiar with the term “pay to play”, but over the past month, that phrase has been coupled with Hillary Clinton and drilled into voters’ heads, despite near-universal agreement that none of the concerns about the Clinton Foundation actually amount to any sort of quid pro quo. The state similarly declined to sue Trump University.

It was unclear on Monday whether Trump meant that he had never discussed the donation with Bondi – effectively contradicting Reichelderfer – or if he had simply never mentioned the Trump University case.
