During the 2016 presidential campaign, Trump repeatedly vowed to instruct a special prosecutor to investigate Clinton if he won. Daria said that he won’t be reporting to Attorney General Jeff Sessions because he’s already recused himself from any investigation relating to the presidential campaign.
Rosenstein learned about Trump’s plan on May 8, Durbin said.
Then, on Thursday, Trump again pointed to Rosenstein’s “very, very strong letter” as a primary reason for the firing. Rosenstein, however, said he was not pressured to prepare the document, Durbin said.
When asked, Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla, would not confirm Graham’s comments.
“There was no collusion – everybody, even my enemies have said there was no collusion”, Mr. Trump added.
On another note, President Trump met with Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos at the White House Thursday afternoon.
On Wednesday, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein finally gave Democrats and the mainstream media what they’ve been demanding for months now.
It has been anything but.
The FBI and Congress are looking into potential links between Mr Trump’s campaign team and Russian Federation.
Texas Sen. John Cornyn, the number-two Republican in the Senate and a member of its Intelligence committee, said after the briefing that he told Rosenstein he was anxious about the committees stepping on the FBI’s toes.
Thursday’s meeting wasn’t the first time Trump has privately addressed TV anchors and reporters.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-San Francisco, called Mueller a “respected public servant of the highest integrity” at a news conference Thursday. Facing persistent questions from Democratic senators at his confirmation hearing, Rosenstein would not commit to an appointment, saying all investigations conducted by the Justice Department are by definition “independent investigations”.
Analysis: “You’re fired” may backfire.
Rosenstein developed a reputation in Maryland for being apolitical, but that standing was put to the test after the White House used his memo to justify Comey’s ouster.
That includes any links between Trump campaign associates and Russian Federation, as well as “any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation”, according to the letter appointing him.
Former FBI chief Robert Mueller was tasked on Wednesday with leading a beefed-up investigation into whether Mr Donald Trump’s team colluded with Russian Federation to tilt the 2016 election in the president’s favour.
“I think that’s an open question”, said Democratic Senator Chris Coons of DE when asked whether Comey would appear before Congress, adding that it remained to be seen “how ongoing congressional investigations will be coordinated with the special counsel”.
“I am heartened by the news of Mr. Mueller’s appointment, but in no way does it diminish the need for Congress to play an active role to get to the bottom of recent events”, said Sen. Lindsey Graham of SC.
Despite the appointment, at least three congressional committees are continuing their investigations, leading to some turf warfare and sniping as the Senate Intelligence Committee and the Senate Judiciary Committee both sought to lay claim to testimony from Comey, while the House Oversight Committee also hoped to hear from the former director. Congressional committees can’t prosecute. “If I were Mr. Mueller, I would jealously guard the witness pool”.
“People have to understand that now that we’ve handed it off to a special counsel that that’s where most of the questions are going to have to be directed”, said Senator John Thune of South Dakota, the third-ranking Republican.
