The claims are mostly unsubstantiated at this point.
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson announced that the State Department had secured Warmbier’s release at the direction of the president. If Trump and his attorney do not grasp this fundamental principle now, it may come as a rude awakening when they find out that Trump can not stonewall an investigation into his potential wrongdoing.
The former Federal Bureau of Investigation director hedged his comments, but congressional investigators were reportedly already looking into whether Sessions and Kislyak met on the sidelines of a foreign policy speech President Trump gave in April 2016. Lawmakers have already aired many of their concerns about their former colleague – from his meetings with the Russian ambassador to the U.S.to his role in the firing of Comey.
U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions is in the hot seat Tuesday as he’s expected to be grilled by the Senate Intelligence Committee on his meetings with a Russian official and any discussions he had with the president before FBI Director James Comey was sacked. That was Axios’ Mike Allen’s take on the loyalty pledges and effusive praise Cabinet members offered Trump in a 10-minute televised worship session of the president. White House frustrations with the Justice Department spilled into public view last week, when Trump on Twitter criticized the legal strategy in defending his proposed travel ban.
Senators want to get Sessions’ take on all this. Yun then met last week with the North Korean ambassador at the U.N.in NY, where Yun learned about Warmbier’s condition. The cost was “outrageous”, he said.
“That’s just not going to be acceptable”, said Senator Ron Wyden, a Democrat on the committee.
Today: Jeff Sessions testifies before the Senate Intelligence Committee. “I don’t know if he lied. There may be some people that didn’t file their paperwork properly or didn’t file to be registered as foreign agents, but I kind of doubt there’s going to be anything”. It got a lot of press. He told reporters in Beijing, as he departed for Pyongyang, that he hopes his trip will “open a door” for Trump. How could an attorney general who said he would take himself out of the Russian Federation investigation play a role in firing the officer who was leading it? And that was the end of it.
The committee can also work with the Trump administration to come up with a solution. If we get to that point, Sessions – aside from a Fifth Amendment claim – likely will be required at the very least to tell the special counsel in the current case what was discussed regarding attempts to interfere with or impair the Russian Federation investigation and potential prosecution of former national security adviser Michael T. Flynn.
Later, Comey said he was so uncomfortable that he went to Sessions to “implore” him “to prevent any future direct communication between the President and me”.
“Why don’t you tell me?”
After the hearing, there was an impromptu news conference.
There are lots of questions for Sessions. He said he wanted to “help these great gentlemen who are working so hard to really do something with the United Nations and to spend the money more wisely”.
Sessions told Trump he was “honored” to be able to serve him.
Sessions was a leading opponent of the Senate’s 2013 immigration overhaul, which he called too permissive.
In his letter, first obtained by Tom Angell of Massroots.com and verified independently by The Washington Post, Sessions argued that the amendment would “inhibit [the Justice Department’s] authority to enforce the Controlled Substances Act”.
During Sessions’ confirmation hearing, to become Attorney General, Sen.
This time, unlike last week’s much-publicized Comey testimony, the man in the hot seat will be someone who has not been there before.
“He was fabulous”, Sessions recalled.
He noted that the North Koreans had refused to let Swedish officials – America’s diplomatic intermediaries in that country – visit or contact Otto for more than a year. His boss will surely be listening.
On Tuesday, it will be Sessions’s turn in the hot seat.
