In addition to M. bovis, several other species of zoonotic mycobacteria can cause TB in livestock and wildlife, but we do not know much about the risk these pathogens pose to humans. But, on the bright side, BMC officials said the number of deaths due to TB seem to be dropping.
China, which records nine lakh new cases of tuberculosis (TB) every year, continues to remain among the 30 countries most heavily plagued by the infectious disease, authorities have said. But M. bovis is still a major public health problem in rural communities that lack adequate health services and agricultural regulations.
Tuberculosis is a disease caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium Tuberculosis.
TB is spread from person to person through the air. It usually affects the lungs but can also spread to all other organs of the body.
When a person develops active TB disease, the symptoms (such as cough, fever, night sweats or weight loss) may be mild for many months.
“World Tuberculosis Day is a prime opportunity to raise awareness and educate patients and healthcare providers about the disease”, says Sarojini Sonia Qasba, MD, an infectious disease specialist with Bethesda, Md. -based Suburban Hospital, part of Johns Hopkins Medicine.
TB has been treated since the 1950s with a combination of three antibiotics.
People living with HIV accounted for 1.2 million (11%) of all new TB cases. Just over 58 percent of the people newly diagnosed with TB were believed to have had access to quality TB care, and this percentage fell to 20 percent for those diagnosed with multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB)-a term used to describe infections caused by M. tuberculosis isolates that are resistant to the two “backbone” drugs in the armamentarium against TB, isoniazid and rifampicin.
Multi-drug resistant tuberculosis reflects the meeting of an ancient and under-addressed disease – tuberculosis – with an emerging modern threat – antimicrobial resistance.
World Health Organization also recognizes that funding for TB research globally is much lower than what is required.
Zoonotic TB also requires different treatment regimens: M. bovis is intrinsically resistant to pyrazinamide, a key, first-line anti-tuberculosis drug, so patients need some alternative medications and a longer treatment duration. In such a case, more powerful drugs are prescribed to treat the condition.
Local and worldwide experts will put their heads together to try to develop more effective treatment for MDR and XDR TB. They include a 90 per cent reduction in TB deaths and an 80 per cent reduction in TB cases by 2030 compared with 2015.
Globally in 2015 there were an estimated 480,000 cases of MDR-TB – with about half in India, China and Russian Federation.
A year ago alone approximately 30,000 Zimbabweans were diagnosed with TB.
Dealing with childhood TB is hard and crucial because there are several challenges in diagnosis and treatment. The duration for the treatment of this program is two years. If you test positive for TB, then you should consult a doctor immediately and follow the course of the treatment as advised by the doctor without fail. “That has now been registered in South Africa and is available to treat many patients with drug-resistant TB”. “But, migration and travel mean that highly drug-resistant TB strains have emerged in nearly every part of the world”, said the Lancet. She is practicing at Metro Hospitals, Noida and MP Heart Clinic at GK1.
Speaking of the state’s battle against tuberculosis, Dr Raghunandan, joint director of the Revised National Tuberculosis Programme (RNTCP) in Karnataka, says it has rolled out an innovative and visionary electronic recording and reporting system called Nishchay since 2012.
