Two cringeworthy minutes of Fox News commentary on Gretchen Carlson’s appearance

Carlson’s attorneys released a statement Thursday spelling out what they said were the ratings changes for Carlson’s FNC show, The Real Story With Gretchen Carlson.

Meanwhile, Carlson wrote glowingly about Ailes in a memoir published previous year. If that’s the meaning here, then who might these people be?

Fox News also cited data that showed ratings improvement on “Fox and Friends” after Carlson was replaced on the program in 2013.

Ailes, however, called the allegations false.

Another reason sexual harassment is so pervasive is different perceptions of what it is.

Yet the damage probably won’t be equal, she added.

“As executive producer of NBC’s Tomorrow late-night show starring Tom Snyder, Ailes hired a twenty-something female segment producer named Randi Harrison who told Ailes that his $400-a-week salary offer was too low”. On Wednesday, 21st Century Fox said it remains confident in Ailes. “It’s about the termination of employment”.

A second ex-employee, who also said Ailes verbally harassed her with inappropriate comments during one-on-one meetings, said the powerful and famously combative executive has so far escaped the consequences of his alleged behavior, because “when it comes to this issue, there’s already a conspiracy of silence”. Really, we have a lot of the same characteristics. “It’s a coup”, one person close to the company told me. He once noted that I would stop at nothing to do the job. “I’m sure he feels that he’s gotten away with it all these years and he will continue to”. “It’s extremely hard to have an effective sexual harassment training. if you’re not in the room with an individual, having to look across the table and hear the concern in (the) voice” of someone who feels they’ve been harassed.

“Although this was a hard step to take, I had to stand up for myself and speak out for all women and the next generation of women in the workplace”, Carlson said in a statement”. The company said that it has “full confidence” in Ailes and Doocy.

Doocy allegedly “regularly” treated Carlson in a “sexist and condescending way”, examples of which include “pulling down her arm to shush her during a live telecast”, and “mocking her during commercial breaks, shunning her off air, refusing to engage with her on air, belittling her contributions to the show, and generally attempting to put her in her place”.

“It is a problem”, said Jennifer A. Drobac, a professor at Indiana University’s Robert H. McKinney School of Law who has authored a textbook about sexual harassment law. She was an attractive woman, and this is TV.

Carslon’s act fits squarely within the ethos of a news network that thinks first and foremost about the attractiveness and sex appeal of its on-air female talent.

That’s a pretty awkward defense.

From May 30 through June 23, Carlson’s program averaged 1.22 million viewers, compared with 789,000 for her 2 p.m. Such an approach might even help him win this case.
