Ty Detmer reportedly confirms he will be BYU’s new offensive coordinator

“It’s an honor to announce Ty Detmer and Ilaisa Tuiaki as the offensive and defensive coordinators on our coaching staff at BYU“, Sitake said.

Ilaisa Tuiaki was an assistant coach at Oregon State with Kalani Sitake.

“I am excited to be back home”, Tuiaki stated. “We’ve had great discussions about it, and we have been able to step up”.

Ty Detmer, a former Heisman-winning quarterback and BYU alum, may be the latest hire by new BYU coach Kalani Sitake, according to reports from KSL.com, a news station based out of Salt Lake City.

“My family and I are extremely excited to be part of the football program at BYU again”, Detmer said in a BYU release. “I’m excited to get to work and continue the incredible legacy of BYU football”. Tuiaki is another first-time coordinator who previously served as the linebackers and special teams coach at Oregon State, where Sitake was defensive coordinator before landing the Cougars’ head coaching job. I’m grateful to the Oregon State family and for Coach Andersen and everything he’s done for my career.

Sitake has coached several Pac-12 and Mountain West Conference honorees, including Morris Trophy winners Star Lotulelei (2011) and Nate Orchard (2014). Detmer went on to have a 14-year National Football League career, so he without a doubt knows a thing or two about having success at the highest level. He helped the Utes win seven of eight bowl games during his tenure.

Boise State DC Marcel Yates might be interested in moving to an FBS school, and might bring some further insights into what the Beavers will run into when the Broncos comes to town next season as well.

Born in Nuku’alofa, Tonga, and raised in Laie, Hawai’I, and Provo, Utah, Sitake becomes the first FBS head football coach of Tongan descent. “I’ve always been a fan and tied to the BYU program growing up just down the street from the stadium”.
