U.S. sends strong message to North Korea through ‘attack drones’

Following President Park Guen-hye’s departure from the Blue House in Seoul, Tillerson will meet for the first time with South Korea’s acting president, Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn, who is obliged to call new elections within 60 days.

Seoul has maintained the policy of a “nuclear-free Korean Peninsula” since 1991, when then-President Roh Tae-woo declared that South Korea would not “manufacture, possess, store, deploy, or use nuclear weapons”.

“The Ministry of National Defense and the Joint Chiefs of Staff ordered all servicemen to raise their monitoring and alertness against North Korea”, said a military official. For instance, North Korea has allegedly been selling battlefield radio systems (banned under United Nations sanctions) through a front company called Global Communications in Malaysia.

Compared to the rest of the world, South Koreans have the most to worry about.

North Korea conducted two nuclear tests previous year, as well as numerous missile launches, the latest on March 6 when it fired four ballistic missiles into the sea off Japan.

The United States began to deploy the system a week ago, a day after North Korea test-fired four missiles.

But he told a news conference there was no choice but to recognize Kim Jong Un as leader.

His request is certain to fall on deaf ears, as Beijing seems determined to use all possible means short of outright violation of global trade rules to punish Seoul for deploying the anti-missile system, which it views as undermining its security interests.

Other factors complicating the secretary of state’s discussions in Seoul and Beijing are the complex political situation in South Korea, which has just impeached its president, and China’s resentment about the deployment in South Korea of a controversial USA defensive missile system. During the Obama administration, Gardner repeatedly called for accelerating the deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system in South Korea to protect US allies and the tens of thousands of American troops in the region. “Lotte, leave China! Boycott Korean goods!”

In the wake of South Korea’s deployment of Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system, conditions have been tense between the country and China. “This is the dignity China should have as a major power”.

The stakes are high for South Korea, and tourism is a particularly vulnerable sector. Lotte’s online shopping site was crippled by cyber-attacks. Picture taken on March 6, 2017.

The punishment didn’t stop there. China, which provides North Korea with most of its food and fuel, doesn’t want a unified Korea allied with the US on its doorstep. The company made the decision official before the cruise docked at Jeju, she said.

The United States sees her impeachment otherwise without reversal to the THAAD deployment and South Korean Government adherence to that.

Bai, a Resgreen employee, said colleagues had sent round messages before the trip to suggest that nobody set foot in South Korea. While China has recently banned the trade of some items, the list is still not exhaustive. For example, in spring 2012 during China’s 10-week standoff with the Philippines over fishing rights around the Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea, the number of Chinese tourists to Philippines drastically decreased from an “unofficial” travel ban.

The frontrunner, Moon Jae-In has called for economic reunification with the North and eventual political and military unification. “But I think so far it continues to be a discussion, and it isn’t going to prevent us from continuing to have our cooperative discussions about how we want to jointly work together to approach the North Korea threat”.

Seoul should have moved faster to restore a swap line with Tokyo past year in time for the signing of an accord on sharing military information between the two sides, experts say. Therefore, the ban is largely a symbolic gesture.

Unlike the worsening China-America tussle, the bonhomie between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin does hold out hope for resolving a similar security dilemma over the US’ sea-based Aegis ballistic missile defence system, which Russia alleges to be an American instrument to endanger its security. If forced to choose, it is a safe bet that Seoul would pick Washington, not Beijing, for even more compelling security and economic reasons.

But he also said South Korea should learn to “say “No” to the Americans”.

Leading candidates to replace Park have split over THAAD. Not surprisingly, China never liked TPP and was happy to see it fail.

He denounced the North’s “cruel and ruthless behavior” in the wake of the murder in Malaysia last month of Kim Jong Nam, the estranged half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Thus far, however, the Trump administration has not articulated a strategy.
