That doesn’t mean that there won’t be enough Assassin’s Creed to get your teeth into this year. Now, Kotaku says the next entry in the stealth-action series is set in Egypt. More notably, it says that the game, code-named Empire, won’t come out this year. These rumors, which originated from the 4chan message boards, and thus should be taken with a pile of salt, say that the next Assassin’s Creed won’t hit in fall 2016, breaking from the annual release schedule, instead being pushed to an undisclosed timeframe in 2017. It puts developers under a lot of pressure to quickly turn out quality products (and it’s especially hard for complex open-word games like Assassin’s Creed) and runs the risk of fatiguing fans. However, after the poor reception of Assassin’s Creed Unity in 2014, Empire was bumped.
Assassin’s Creed’s next major entry is allegedly set in ancient Egypt and will serve as a prequel to the entire series, according to a series of reports. As a longtime Assassin’s Creed fan, I’d love to see the franchise adopt a more global perspective, and I always enjoy seeing how Ubisoft interprets different historical settings. This would make sense when taking into account the series’ now-standard development time line between Ubisoft’s various studios.
“We can’t comment on rumor or speculation”.
Then again, Ubisoft is apparently talking about building a trilogy around the new character, with later games possibly headed to Greece and Rome, so North Africa might not be too much of a leap. A year-long break could really help the developers settle down and figure out how they want the franchise to play out moving forward. Empire is believed to be set in Egypt, we presume that is ancient Egypt. Are you up for some parkour and grappling with the Sphinx in Assassins Creed Empire? Let us know in the comments section below!
