O’Connor and the Oneida Indian Nation issued a joint statement Friday, saying that they and descendants of village founder Hugh White are joining together to create a new village seal. “Certainty her character pushed the envelope as is always seen on any show on comedy central, but again the outcome could have been a lot worse had we chosen not to participate and they came to town and just ran rough shot”, said O’Connor.
O’Connor said the seal shows a historic wrestling match that figured into good relations between village founder Hugh White and the Oneidas.
“I think you have to take all the facts into consideration”, Whitesboro mayor Patrick O’Connor told reporters back in July, spending actual time trying to defend the blatantly frightful village seal. Soon, the town seal of Whitesboro will no longer be a white man choking a Native American.
The town of Whitesboro, in NY, gathered national attention when its people cast a vote on whether or not to keep the seal. While humbled that the community wanted to preserve the history of the seal and Mr. White’s involvement, they supported the effort of designing a new logo that would celebrate the Village’s proud history.
The mayor also said that when he spoke with village residents who had voted to keep the Whitesboro seal he felt they were surprised at the amount of negative attention the image had sparked nationwide.
The central New York State village of Whitesboro will finally get rid of the “racist” town seal that appears to show a white man choking a Native American.
After the initial vote on January 11th the Village Board held a meeting to discuss the options on the seal.
The U-turn follows ridicule by the satirical news program The Daily Show after local residents voted to keep the emblem.
“Nobody wants to be the brunt of jokes in any community, so I’m pleased that they reached this decision”, said Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente.
Halbritter said it is “one of many examples of communities taking welcome steps to be inclusive and promote our region’s commitment to civility”.
