The striker suffered a hamstring injury in Toronto FC’s match on Saturday and the club confirmed on Monday that he would be out for 6-8 weeks. Everyone behind him, from Jordan Morris and Gyasi Zardes, to Bobby Wood and Chris Wondolowski, is not proven at the global level.

Altidore, 26, has featured regularly in US squads in recent years and would have been likely to have made the squad for the June 3-26 Copa America Centenario taking place in the United States next month.

After Puerto Rico, the usa team plays Ecuador on May 25 in Frisco, Texas and Bolivia on May 28 in Kansas City, Kansas. MLS players who make the final roster will be released by their clubs on May 23 and join the team that day in Dallas.

Klinsmann has to name his 23-man roster for Copa America by Friday. The other two are midfielder Emerson Hyndman and forward Julian Green, who scored against Belgium at the 2014 World Cup. This means that only players from Mexican or European clubs will participate in camp this week and the friendly in Puerto Rico.

“It’s really important in terms of transitioning our players coming in from Europe and some who are already done in Mexico to keep them in a flow, to keep them in a rhythm”, Klinsmann said. U.S. kick off their Copa America campaign against Colombia on 3 June in Santa Clara, California. To kick things off, Jurgen Klinsmann is holding a week-long camp in Miami this week in preparation for the team’s first friendly against Puerto Rico on Sunday afternoon (12 p.m. ET, FS1). Players like Perry Kitchen, John Brooks, Eric Lichaj, Matt Miazga and Matt Orozco will look to use this “transition camp” to get on the final squad.
