The backstory, according to Janissa Valdez, is that she was approaching an unidentified female student when she was waylaid and body-slammed by Kehm, the cop. The officer then handcuffs her, picks her up and leads her past the group of students who were in the hallway.
“She was just knocked out”, the mad mother continued. I talked to the officer.
Students can be heard in the video shouting and asking the girl if she is OK. They tell the station that Kehm was kicked several times, although Janissa denies kicking the officer.
Gloria Valdez told ABC News Thursday that her 12-year-old daughter was left stunned and bruised after the March 29 incident caught on video that was posted online this week.
The video is now the driving force behind two investigations in the San Antonio Independent School District, one by police and the other by administration.
“She really doesn’t remember what happened because she was I guess unconscious”, she told KENS.
“It’s very very concerning”, Price told the San Antonio Current.
Gloria Valdez, Janissa’s mother, said she arrived at the school to pick up her daughter just moments after the incident. “We need to gather all the details, but also we will not tolerate excessive force in this district”.
About 43% of all US public schools – including 63% of middle and 64% of high schools – had school resource officers on their grounds during the 2013-2014 school year, the National Center for Education Statistics said in May.
Josh Kehm, 27, has been employed by the San Antonio school district since February 2015, according to his now-deleted Linkedin page.
“How many students of colour must be brutalized by police officers in their schools before we recognize the pattern?” she said in the statement.
