VLC Media Player Available on Apple TV

Our mission for VLC for the Apple TV was to fulfil our claim “plays it all” and we got close: it supports virtually all formats under the sun (like the iOS version of VLC). With the introduction of VLC, you can play any content regardless of their file formats. Though it has taken a few months of waiting, VLC for Apple TV is now officially available through the App Store. Two thousand beta testers have been using it since mid-November via Apple’s TestFlight service. You can browse, select, and play content using the clicker or the remote.

The Apple TV was released back in late October after being announced in September during the iPhone 6s event.

– Content Discovery: The app automatically discovers video files stored on your local network, using the SMB, UPnP media server, FTP and PLEX protocols.

One of the most popular video players for Windows, Mac, and other platforms has been VLC, and now it’s available on the new Apple TV. You can also watch videos at a custom playback speed, which VideoLAN says was done because “VLC is increasingly used to watch talks and documentation in education”. Like all Apple TV apps, you’ll need to search for it on the device itself. In fact, VLC uses opensubtitles.org to let you download missing subtitles during playback, a first for the VLC app. For web radio and music playback, VLC leverages the community service hatchet.is to show artist imagery and biographies, in addition to album artwork. If you want to play streams or files not stored on your own server, this feature is for you. This is another feature that you can’t find on Apple TV.

You’ll also be able to paste the URL for direct streams, as well as control playback, from the web interface VLC provides. Like for files, you can send multiple URLs rows in a row and they will be attached to the playback queue.

While’s not available to purchase yet, the Griffin Survivor Play is a protective sleeve for the Apple TV remote that’s coming soon. In a nutshell, the new Apple TV is a huge overhaul over the previous generation, which isn’t a huge surprise considering there hasn’t been a new model since 2012.
