In the team pursuit, all four Canadian riders were sent sprawling during their qualifying heat against New Zealand.

In this year’s event at Hong Kong, the Great British team will be hopeful of retaining their table-topping form of last year’s event in London, in which they won five gold medals, but will have to do so without several star names. Nowhere near expectations and the sport suffered.

British Cycling is under the best management it can be following the appointment of Stephen Park as performance director, according to the Briton who is the new head of Cycling Australia.

But that was pie-in-the-sky thinking. Fail to deliver and you get hit.

The trio of Ethan Mitchell, Sam Webster and Eddie Dawkins on Thursday morning (NZT) prevailed over the Netherlands in the cut-throat new format, with three rides in two hours at the UCI World Championships.

The 22-year-old Valente is also scheduled to compete in two other races at the world championships conducted by UCI, cycling’s global governing body, the individual pursuit and the Madison.

Heading into the bell lap, the Australia team led by 0.412 seconds, but Dygert positioned herself on the front of the train to deliver Team USA the come-from-behind win.

Meares’ post-Olympics retirement headlines the new era for the national track cycling squad, with British coach Simon Jones also the new Cycling Australia performance director.

“We have come in with a re-think and re-structure after Rio”, he said.

“We’re where we said we would be and we have not missed any deadlines in terms of delivering the action plan”. Finally it’s my time to be a world champion. They were down-scaled in priorities by CNZ.

Italy and Britain will ride off for bronze.

In the first round, they produced a 43.183s time, with the Dutch managing 43.481, good enough for the gold rideoff, ahead of France and Poland, who battled for the bronze.

The quartet of Michaela Drummond, Racquel Sheath, Rushlee Buchanan and Jaime Nielsen produced an outstanding first-up ride in 4:20.171, on the back-up of a well-structured and even-paced race.

Barker, the Olympic team pursuit gold medallist alongside Katie Archibald, Laura Kenny and Joanna Rowsell Shand at Rio 2016, took second while D’Hoore finished with the bronze medal.

Nielsen was in that team, and the bronze medallists of 2009.

“I am a bit disappointed”. We have all worked really hard, and I’m looking forward to seeing the rest of them racing too, we have a great team.

There are sure to be those pooh-poohing results in the year after an Olympics.

“But I think British Cycling is probably one of the best governing bodies in the world at trying to promote equality between men and women”.
