Warriors secure Varejao as Bogut back up

According to reports, Varejao has agreed to sign with the Golden State Warriors. He cleared waivers on Sunday, allowing him to sign with any other team (except Cleveland) and be eligible for the playoffs.

Despite a 49-5 record, the Warriors had a need for another big body to play center. Varejao was traded from Cleveland to Portland at the deadline and then waived by the Blazers. But Varejao is a smart player who probably can help out for 5 or 6 minutes at a time for a good team.

Anderson Varejao just jumped from National Basketball Association title contenders to the defending champions gearing up for a repeat.

Teams who can not match the Golden State Warriors with speed movement will try to beat them with size.

This is why having a healthy Bogut is vital.

As long as Varejao is able to contribute in the majority of games remaining on the schedule for the Warriors, he can make an impact. Although he is not the shot-blocking threat most teams would covet, he alters shot because of his size and long arms.

“For the last 12 years, I have had the honor of representing the city of Cleveland and the Cavaliers organization, and for that I will forever be grateful”, Varejao posted on Facebook.

And he also is expected to be a fit in the locker room.

How Anderson Varejao works with his potential new teammates is an underrated factor in deciding if his acquisition will be worthwhile. He spent almost 12 seasons with the Cavaliers, appearing in 71 postseason games. That can not be overlooked.

Although the signing is still not official, Varejao told Cleveland.com’s Chris Haynes that he is excited to join the Warriors. No, but the Warriors get to add some veteran frontcourt depth for nothing and that’s a good move.
