Tennell credits her mother, Jean, who worked the night shift as a hospital nurse in order to drive Tennell to practice. After their communal collapse in Wednesday’s short program (where they also placed 9-10-11) the women were so far out of contention that they could have, and probably should have, treated their free skates like an Ice Chips routine.
In between Lutzes and toe loops, you may have noticed an unusual mark on the inside of USA figure skater Mirai Nagasu’s leg during her skating performances. They’ll be in pursuit of Russian skaters Evgenia Medvedeva, who came to South Korea as the favorite, and 15-year-old Alina Zagitova, who stunned the skating world with a dazzling, 82.92 score to lead all skaters headed into the final, free skate portion. At the 2014 Olympic trials, she finished third, which should have earned her a ticket to the Sochi Olympics, but U.S. Figure Skating made a decision to send fourth-place finisher Ashley Wagner instead, given Wagner’s stronger results in worldwide events that season.
Canada’s Kaetlyn Osmond, the 2017 world silver medalist, stood third.
This won’t be the first time Tennell or Nagasu have touched the Olympic ice, they both competed in the team event where they earned bronze medals.
“It’s been a long three weeks”, Nagasu said. “I said, Mirai, you did it when it counted. We were about to lose our medal”.
Mirai Nagasu said she felt like she already won the Olympics by landing a triple Axel in the team event last week.
Women’s boblsed begins Tuesday morning (5:50 AM) with the first and second runs. But she fell on a triple loop losing 2.10 points and walked out of another combination jump.
Vying For The Mirror Ball Trophy?
“I thought of this as my audition for ‘Dancing With the Stars, ‘ ” Nagasu said. She withdrew from Russian nationals prior to the Olympics which gave Zagitova the chance to win gold. “Making it is the hard part'”.
She also talked about her growing exhaustion over the course of the Games, especially after the euphoria of winning bronze.
“I just got a little twisted up”, Tennell, 20, said of the extra steps in two jumps Thursday. “At the time I was kind of in the prime of my career. I wanted to be here and I’m so happy”. Nagasu’s fall put in her in ninth place.
Nagasu softened that sentiment a few minutes later. “When I’m up in the air I turn three-and-a-half times, hope for the best, and I land on my right foot”. “Most of it, if I had to sum it up to one word, is timing”. Download the Team USA app today. I’ve been having some great skates, some rough skates. “I’m going to go home and see my dogs”. “So it’s really cool that I’m able to follow along in the shadow I guess”.
“It seems like there’s just a lull in the talent and the consistency and the level of skating that’s going on today, ” she said. She explained that the boot split and moisture had caused the blade to sink into her skate and affect the mounting. “She had a really big, good double axel but there’s a little difference in technique for the double and triple axel”.
“Well done to her”, Medvedeva said. “This journey started with me wanting to become better, wanting to improve myself and change myself”.
But she was encouraged by her response to the adversity.
