Wenger apologises for sending off against Burnley

Wenger clashed with Taylor after being sent to the stands by referee Jon Moss for protesting Burnley’s 92nd-minute penalty award, which allowed Andre Gray to equalise.

“I saw it [the winning penalty] on television, I at least saw what happened”, Wenger said.

Arsenal moved up to second place in the Premier League with an unbelievable win against Burnley at home on Sunday.

Wenger was to have the last laugh, as Laurent Koscielny was caught by Ben Mee in the dying seconds and Alexis Sanchez held his nerve to convert a pressure Panenka penalty.

“That’s a freakish, unfortunate twist of fate, for sure”, Dyche said.

A late victor can lift a side to raise their game and really go all guns blazing into their next match, but in the cold light of day, a reprieve from the officials masked plenty of worrying deficiencies.

It leaves Arsenal short of central midfield options, with Mohamed Elneny on duty with Egypt at the African Cup of Nations and Santi Cazorla suffering with a long-term injury.

The Swiss midfielder was imperious before seeing red for a reckless two-footed tackle on Steven Defour, and losing him allowed Burnley to gain a foothold in the game.

Alexis Sanchez has scored three and assisted another in his two previous games against Burnley at the Emirates Stadium (all competitions).

The 24-year-old’s dismissal was his fifth in the league since the start of last season – more than any other player in Europe’s top five divisions – and his second of this campaign, having also been sent off by Moss against Swansea in October.

Their reward came when Mesut Ozil’s corner was met by Mustafi’s head, the centre-back rising highest to flick the ball into the far corner of the net. “I feel it was an intense game”, he said.

Still the clock ran down.

The FA are set to make a decision on Wenger’s punishment after the Arsenal boss shoved Taylor despite already being sent off for his verbal outburst.

“Teams who are on fantastic form have gone to Arsenal and found it tough, so it is a very tough game for us”.

However, the visitors were given hope of getting something from the fixture when Moss reduced the Gunners to 10 men.

“We went about the game well”.

Nonetheless, Burnley have had an excellent season thus far, and now sit tenth in the table having won eight of their 21 league games.

The sending off energised Burnley, who pushed for the equaliser.

“Once we were 1-0 up we made it more complicated by going down to 10 men”, he said. “It’s offside. As simple as that”.
