“I think he ought to play golf”, Bush said in 2013.
It seems that Donald Trump’s many comments criticizing Barack Obama for playing golf while in office will not soon be forgotten.
Exactly how many of those appearances resulted in 18 holes of golf remain unanswered, but we can imagine it was a fair few.
Germany’s largest-selling daily, Bild, reported that Mr Trump did not once look Ms Merkel in the eye once. “Then we pay for his golf”, Trump tweeted again that same month. Perhaps he just needed extra grip to use that cell phone?
During yesterday’s House hearing on Russian election interference, FBI Director James Comey confirmed that they’ve seen no evidence that Obama ordered any wiretap on Trump Tower.
But he’s got some way to go to surpass both Dwight Eisenhower, who played 800 rounds, and record-holder Woodrow Wilson, who enjoyed 1,200 rounds. When asked if Trump plans to cut down on his weekend trips to the resort, which could help with the federal budget, Spicer told journalists that Trump’s extravagant golfing trips are “part of being president.”
“It’s the same reason he can have lunch or dinner with somebody”, Spicer told reporters at the White House.
In other words: The Trump administration doesn’t want to admit that the president made a bad tweet.
But White House spokesman Sean Spicer also said Trump’s right to “privacy” is one reason that the Trump administration hasn’t trumpeted the outcomes of his meetings on golf courses. “He played more golf past year than Tiger Woods”. “How you use the game of golf is something he’s talked about”.
Mr Spicer contacted Mr Kim Darroch, the British ambassador to Washington, on Thursday night (US local time) to try to deal with the unusual rupture between the United States and its closest global ally.
Von der Leyen on Sunday insisted that North Atlantic Treaty Organisation spending should not be the only criteria used to measure Germany’s military efforts, a veiled refrerence to its peacekeeping efforts in several countries and participation in the US-led fight against the “Islamic State” (IS) armed group.
Now, citing the President’s privacy, Trump’s aides are left trying to hide the President’s frequent golfing.
